A good example of predictive AI from the Waymo Driver: in a split second, it predicted an initial crash of human-driven cars in the next lane, anticipated a secondary collision, and proactively shifted lanes — all while managing its distance from the vehicles around it.

A 60mph+ reckless wrong-way driver on a 40mph road can easily lead to severe collisions. Two different Waymos (and an attentive human ahead!) avoided tragedy in Phoenix the other week by taking evasive action.

We recently began serving riders in Austin, and it’s great to see the safety benefits of the Waymo Driver already playing out for both our riders and other road users.

Safety in action - as another car pulls into our lane in LA, the Waymo Driver cranks the wheel 270° in 1 second to keep everyone safe. Constant 360° sensing, deep understanding and prediction, real-time decisions, and precise actuation.

Speed matters. A Waymo vehicle was driving in a 25mph zone in LA when an oncoming car swerved into our lane while speeding up to over 70mph… 3x the speed means 9x the destructive energy. Good to see the Waymo Driver react early and safely to make room.

I was riding in a Waymo with my kids on a weekend afternoon on a quiet suburban road when another car recklessly cut across in front of us. The Waymo Driver handled it so well that the kids didn’t even notice. Grateful to our team!

While most drivers are attentive and follow the rules, we see something like the following more often than you’d hope. Stay safe folks!

Street racing at 125+ mph on the I-10 in LA led to a crash, but the Waymo Driver saw it coming: it detected the anomalous situation early, tracked the reckless vehicle post-crash, and maneuvered defensively to safely bypass the scene.

Kids chasing dogs, chasing balls on the streets of LA… once again, Waymo AI with advanced sensing making our roads safer.

Over 55M miles of fully autonomous driving data shows the Waymo Driver is making roads safer for everyone, especially for those most at risk – pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users. Strong positive impact already and growing exponentially.

We’re starting 2026 focused on what matters most: our riders and those we share the streets with. While our roads can feel chaotic, the Waymo Driver provides a consistent, safe, and calm space to get you where you’re going.

As the Waymo Driver demonstrates strong performance in freezing conditions this winter, we’re moving beyond core technical validation. Driving in multiple snowy cities, we are now refining the rider experience and logistics required for consistent service in snow.

Great to see the Waymo Driver performing well in Atlanta as we prep for our launch on Uber later this summer, and another encouraging datapoint on generalizing well across geos.

Earlier this year, we began testing the Waymo Driver on Phoenix freeways in rider-only mode with our employees. Here’s a glimpse of freeway driving as we keep pushing forward to safely and responsibly scale our operations.

A haboob swept through Phoenix yesterday after monsoon storms, bringing heavy winds, rain, and dust that knocked down power lines and trees. Through it all, Waymo safely got people where they needed to go.
