Naval Ravikant reveals Elon Musk cut off Bill Gates after he placed a roughly $1 billion short bet against tesla. "Elon was like, why would you do that? How would you short Tesla?" "Bill goes, well, my financial advisors looked at the math, and there's no way it's overvalued, so I'm going to make money on the short." "Elon goes, what do you care about making money? I thought you were into electric cars and climate change and saving the world. What are you doing trying to save a few bucks betting against it?" "I think he never talked to Bill Gates after that." "That's when I realized Elon's a purist. He means what he says. The money is a tool for him to get what he's trying to do." "There's a lot of people who set these audacious goals to inspire people, but you kind of know they don't really need it. Elon, I take at face value. I really do think he intends to get to Mars within a defined window of time. He doesn't want to go down in history as the electric car guy. He wants to go down as the guy who got humanity to the stars." PS. A Yale-educated senator just dismantled Boeing's CEO in under 90 seconds using nothing but math. Senator Josh - "What is it that you get paid currently?" Dave - "That's well disclosed in our proxy documents." Senator Josh - "Well, let me help you out. It's $32.8 million this year. Sound right?" Dave - "Yes, it does." Senator Josh - "That's a 45% increase over last year. Sound right?" Dave - "Yes, it does." Senator Josh - "You've got 32,000 machinists in the Pacific Northwest. They got 1% wage increases over 8 years. You got 45% just last year. Do you think maybe these folks deserve a raise?" Dave - "They will definitely get a raise." Then came the verdict. "I've listened to your testimony. The gist seems to be that if you could just get your employees to comply, things would be better. I don't think the problem is with the employees. I think the problem is with you. It's the C-suite. It's the management. Your engineers are probably the best in the world. Your machinists are outstanding. You're the problem." "I just hope to God that you don't destroy this company before it can be saved." PS. The man who produced Johnny Cash, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Adele explains why Hollywood keeps making soulless movies: "The audience comes last. I'm not making it for them, I'm making it for me." "When you make something truly for yourself, you're doing the best thing you possibly can for the audience." "So many big movies are just not good because they're being made by people trying to make something they think someone else is going to like. That's not how art works. That's commerce." "Everything we make as artists are essentially diary entries."

Michael O'Leary on why Ryanair won't use Starlink Wi-Fi: Elon Musk wants Ryanair to install Starlink, but O'Leary did the math and shut it down. "We have to put a couple of dimples on the outside of the aircraft. It would be about a 2% fuel drag." "My fuel bill is 5 billion a year. 2% fuel drag is something of the order of about 100 million." "Starlink believes passengers will pay you 1 euro, 2 euro, and it will pay for itself." "Clearly they've never met any Ryanair passengers." He's not spending 100 million so passengers can scroll for free:

Most CEOs of $2 trillion companies stopped reading customer emails a long time ago, Jeff Bezos never did. Bezos says one customer complaint isn't a customer service problem, it's a root cause waiting to be fixed for every customer. "My email address is famous and I keep it, it's jeff@amazon. com. I'll get one from a customer and there's a defect. Something seems a little odd about it." "I ask the team to do a case study and find real root causes, usually causes, and then real root fixes." "When you fix it, you're not fixing it for that one customer. You're fixing it for every customer. That process is a gigantic part of what we do." PS. Linus Charles wrote Linux at 21 from his mother's apartment in Helsinki and he just explained the philosophy that made him give it all away for free: "When I started Linux, I needed an operating system for my own use, and today you find Linux everywhere." "In small embedded devices, supercomputers, this technology allows you to expand into many different niches." "Working in an open source project where you work with hundreds, potentially thousands of people, makes the whole technology even more interesting." "One of the nice things about Linux and open source in general is that there's a lot of different things and everybody has something that you can give to the project." PS.
