Pleased to make my first visit to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in the shadow of the unjustifiable attacks the country recently suffered. I conveyed the EU’s full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its people. We greatly value Saudi Arabia’s stabilising role and efforts to promote dialogue and diplomacy. It is crucial that the momentum of the US-Iran ceasefire agreement is maintained and that all parties engage in good faith to achieve a sustainable, comprehensive agreement. Iran’s leadership should seize this opportunity to address the concerns of the international community - on nuclear, on ballistic missiles, on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and on its support to proxies in particular Hezbollah. Diplomacy is the only path towards lasting peace.

Excellent talk with Volodymyr Zelenskyy / Володимир Зеленський after a full day of meetings in Kyiv and a touching and inspiring commemoration of Ukraine’s independence. We discussed our continued support for Ukraine and the way forward. The EU has stood with Ukraine since the very first day of Russia’s war of aggression, and we will continue to stand by Ukraine’s side. Ukraine can count on us. I commended the work that is being done to fulfil the accession reform criteria, under very challenging circumstances, and encouraged Ukraine to continue on that path. EU membership is the best way to ensure strong, democratic and independent institutions in Ukraine.

Now we need to accelerate the work towards an agreement before the end of 2026. Cyprus is a key bridge to the Middle East, a region that remains a priority for the EU. We are strengthening our relationship with partners in the region. I am looking forward to the summit we will hold with Gulf partners on 24 October. We agreed that Russia’s escalation will not weaken European unity – quite the opposite. Very constructive meeting with Janez Janša, as I conclude the second week of my #TourdesCapitales in Ljubljana. 🇸🇮 A new geopolitical reality calls for a new approach to the next long-term EU budget, with a new structure and a new way of allocating our resources. Our timeline is clear - agree in 2026, legislate and prepare in 2027, deliver the funding in 2028. I commend and thank Slovenia for its steadfast support for enlargement. There is real momentum in this process. Reforms by candidates are paying off and must continue. ¡Lepo je obiskati Slovenijo!

Very good discussion with Prime Minister GR Kyriakos Mitsotakis as I continue my #TourdesCapitales in Athens. 🇬🇷 The events of this summer, from the devastating wildfires and natural disasters to the impacts of the war in the Middle East and Russian hybrid attacks, have once again shown that Europe must be prepared to respond effectively to unforeseen challenges. That’s why we need to reach agreement this year on a long-term budget that gives us the capacity to act. Greece is in a strategic position in the Mediterranean and towards the Middle East. It was important for me to hear the Prime Minister’s perspective about the region. Χαίρομαι πολύ που είμαι στην Ελλάδα!
