So, did you guys blatantly steal from Super Marios Bros.? -- Uhm... no :) Following its UK release, The Great Giana Sisters was pulled from shops after Rainbow Arts received a notice from Nintendo. It eventually became one of the most popular home computer games of its era through piracy and emulation. Any PR is good PR, even the bad one. If you had a C64 back in the day, you had Giana Sisters.

Q: The most agreeable game in history? A: Warcraft: Orcs & Humans (1994) Yesshh, my lord. My liege? Yes, yes, yes. Your will, sire? Your bidding? Players harvest gold, build bases, explore, train armies, and conquer in 24 missions across campaigns. Inspired by Dune II, it launched Blizzard's iconic franchise. Humans defending Azeroth against invading orcs from a dark portal. The classic tale of good versus evil, of light versus darkness... of humans versus orcs. A tale as old as time. Speaking of time, I miss 90s gaming.

Karateka, released in 1984 for the Apple II by Jordan Mechner (while he was a Yale student!), stood out as a groundbreaking title for its era. My biggest achievement as a student was getting out of bed in time for the majority (not all) classes... The innovations included pioneering rotoscoped animation, where Mechner filmed himself performing karate moves on video, traced the frames by hand, and digitized them frame-by-frame for ultra-fluid, lifelike character movements. It was also one of the first games to use cinematic storytelling scenes, inspired by Akira Kurosawa films, and silent movies: wordless cutscenes with cross-cutting (such as showing the princess in peril or the villain's reactions), dramatic pauses and tracking shots. Mechner also had a sense of humor: The Apple II disk included an Easter egg: the game was single-sided but when you flipped the disk it would pay the game the full game upside-down and mirrored, causing players to call tech support in confusion.

Tomb Raider 2 (Core Design/Eidos, 1997) is part of a franchise with the highest grossing female main character in video game history, starring Lara Croft as the sole protagonist, with over 100 million units sold as of 2024. In this part you seek the Dagger of Xian, an ancient Chinese artifact that transforms its wielder into a fire-breathing dragon when plunged into the heart. Once used by a tyrannical emperor to conquer China, it was hidden beneath the Great Wall after Tibetan monks defeated him. Lara journeys from China's Great Wall to Venice's canals, a sunken ocean liner, Tibetan monasteries, and mystical floating islands. The game's scope was truly gigantic! It's not a shooter but relies much more on puzzle/adventure elements, letting Lara use and manipulate objects to open secret passages and reveal items.

Duke Nukem 3D was the first game we ever played in a LAN setting. Whether at an internet café (now a thing of the past, like Blockbuster) or a friend's house, those LAN sessions were legendary. Hauling a 17" monitor, tower, keyboard, mouse, speakers, and cables was quite a sight - especially on public transport. The stares from the older generation (who, I now realize, are my age!) were priceless. The graphics, epic sound effects, legendary weapons, and Duke's total badass attitude made it truly emblematic of 90s gaming. I don't think I ever played a better LAN game.

Fallout (1997), developed by Tim Cain's team at Interplay's Black Isle Studios, is an isometric, turn-based RPG in a retro-futuristic post-apocalyptic world after the 2077 Great War. Its brilliant style features a distinct dystopian look and feel, incredible music and sound effects, and an immersive story. The intro alone is a masterpiece. Players emerge from Vault 13 as the Vault Dweller, seeking a water chip amid moral dilemmas, mutants, and factions in Southern California (2161). Acclaimed for its gameplay, it sold over half a million copies, revitalizing RPGs despite modest expectations. It spawned countless sequels (and a TV series). If you like RPGs, I am sure you gave Fallout a try back then - and if not, do it now, it's worth it.

Heart of Darkness (Infogrames, 1998) was supervised by Éric Chahi, and you can certainly see the resemblance to the much older Another World. It didn't quite capture me the same way, but maybe that's because it wasn't my peak gaming era anymore. What remained were the rather tough death scenes; pretty full-on for a 1998 game. Considering that the main character is a little boy, combined with how "gory" some of the death scenes were, I am surprised that the game didn't get a lot more "PG only" ratings in certain markets. I know, compared to today's standards it all seems pretty tame, but remember this game is now 27 years old. Also, just like Another World, this one was very tough and you simply had to be patient, learn (by trial and error) and get the timings right.

Buckle up for Wings (Cinemaware, 1990), an Amiga gem where you’re a World War I pilot in a Sopwith Camel that handles like a drunk bumblebee! Seriously, I still get airsick playing it. The action sequences echo the style of the 1927 silent film Wings (which clearly inspired it). You start in 1916 (not 1914, when the war began) as a rookie and progress through a military career until 1918 with the Royal Flying Corps and later the Royal Air Force. Missions are chronicled in a daily diary that adds immensely to the atmosphere of this beautifully designed game. Cinemaware were kings of gorgeous titles back then; the opening sequence alone proves it. Mission objectives tie into historical events, like shooting down aces such as Manfred von Richthofen. Many Amiga magazines ranked it among the best games ever made, and I agree, it was a real treat.
