Look at all those quills! 🦔 Our porcupette is growing up fast 🥹 — its quills are coming in and it’s enjoying its first crunchy biscuit. We’re still waiting on quill DNA results to find out whether this little one is a boy or girl, but one thing’s for sure: it’s as cute as ever! 📸: Keeper Kristen

Look at those opossum feet! 🐾 💡 Did you know that opossums, like their marsupial relatives koalas, have opposable thumbs! For opossums, these thumbs are specifically on their hind feet. This, along with their prehensile tail, helps them climb and hold branches!

Trunk practice makes perfect! 🐘 Did you know that elephant trunks have more than 40,000 muscles in them? 🤯 An elephant calf isn’t born with full function of its trunk but slowly learns how to use all those muscles over its first few months of life! While our little one is still exclusively drinking milk, she is already practicing how to use her trunk & copying the trunk movements of her mom and our other adult females! Elephants use their trunks for smelling, communicating, picking up food, holding water & more — so it’s an important skill for her to master over time! 🩶 📸: Keeper Gabby

Little munchies from a little porcupette! 🫶 The baby is getting bigger and more active each day, and is already practicing it’s quintessential porcupine munching sounds! This young one, along with the Zoo’s other prehensile-tailed porcupines, are outreach animals here at the Zoo and live mainly behind the scenes. This means that rather than being in a traditional habitat you can visit, they engage with our guests through our Stage Shows, special events, education programs and summer camps! While the baby has not yet hit the stage, it will soon! So check the schedule and take in a program on your next visit to see if you can spot the quills! 👀⭐️ 📸: Keeper Zoe
