Dear Catcher, This is Mr. Coach. How dare you do a deflection with your mitt on the 100mph FB spiked at 56’ feet. You need to first get off your knee, slide your body over with two knees down, tuck your chin, and get your barehand behind the ball! - Reality: Nice athletic game-saving stop. Do what you gotta do! Catch first, Stop it second. Hands move faster than the body! I’ve never met a pitcher that tried to intentionally throw a fastball in the dirt.

Salvador Perez 2023 vs 2024. What do you see? Here are my thoughts: On the left we see a stagnant “mitt” target, that flexes in and up - which then generates a two piece move. (BALL 4) On the right, well, we see a pancake load to the ground, a pause and a one piece move. (STRIKE 3). Objectively we should know by now, a knee down stance will increase strike % at the bottom. Secondly, a good well executed pre-pitch will improve timing on down-angled pitches. Bottom-feeding.

They say you can’t teach an old dog a new trick. Yasmani Grandal, using a slide board and keyhole to hone his receiving skills. Grandal was a heavy favorite every year to score high in his receiving metrics.

Absolutely ridiculous throw by Angels backstop Logan O’hoppe. No words…just athleticism

Thoughts on One-Knee Setups: One of the toughest things, with the increase in velocity, is a catcher's ability to make the correct decision and attack angle to receive or block a baseball. This becomes easier and quicker out of a one knee set up, due to the ability to sit lower and have a better visual of the plane of the baseball. This allows for the catcher to wait longer, have confidence in his decision with receiving approach and minimize excessive movement or what umpires call noise. You see this a lot with last minute decisions and jerky movements out of traditional set ups. This concept is also beneficial when blocking and recognizing the height of the pitch sooner, due to the lower set up and increasing blocking efficiency.

HOW DO YOU TRAIN MISFIRES ??? We use two machines, and focus on the initial catch as the true catch. Fire one, then immediately the second.

We are believers that static and stationary blocking drills are complete “eyewash”. Kind of like hitting off a tee. The ball is never not still. You need to become an ‘elite problem solver!’
