Brazilian drummer Airto Moreira sat in throughout the Dead's set, with John Cipollina and Boz Scaggs joining for a few tunes during the second set, which Boz opened on lead vocal with "Walkin' Blues," the Dead's first performance of the song since 1966. Just hours before the show, inspectors had reportedly found piles of combustible materials and endless electrical problems. Nonetheless, the love of jamming propelled the show forward and closed out with an ironic “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” You can find this performance of “Iko Iko” in 'Crimson, White, and Indigo,’ captured at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia on 07/07/89, on the Grateful Dead YouTube channel.

The Grateful Dead played their historic In Concert Against AIDS benefit on May 27th, 1989, alongside Tracy Chapman, Tower of Power, Los Lobos, Joe Satriani, and John Fogerty. The benefit would raise funds to support Northern California AIDS agencies, raising awareness and combatting the stigmas against the disease. The energy of the Bay Area coming together to support the cause led to on stage collaborations with Bobby and Jerry joining John Fogerty on guitar and vocals, as well as Randy Jackson on bass, and Steve Jordan on drums.
