Why Meta's new model is a zero “It is a zero because there is no API. We cannot even use it. It is only for internal use by Meta. This is the most performative eval I have seen to date. I am not saying it is not nominally true, and clearly the team has done good work. What is the point of a model that allegedly has parity for the same price, is not even cheaper, and you cannot use?” Jason ✨👾SaaStr.Ai✨ Lemkin Love to hear your thoughts George Cameron Alex Atallah Kavya Kopparapu Simon Willison

Every seed investment is an option bet. “You have to think about the venture portfolio as a bunch of options. Each seed investment is an option bet. You are buying an option to see if it is an outlier, and you want to have enough of those to make sure you have an outlier. When there is true quantitative evidence that it is going to be an outlier, then you position size up.” Venky Ganesan How do seed funds play in a world where mega funds are totally price insensitive and “option bets” is the mindset for seed checks Roger Ehrenberg Charles Hudson 👨🏻💻☕️ Ho Nam Elizabeth Yin 💛 Jason ✨👾SaaStr.Ai✨ Lemkin

Why the memory layer will become more and more important and how Instinct crushed it “One thing about agents that is rare today but will be incredibly common in the next few years is this memory layer. If you look at Instinct or Muse, one of the things that they have nailed is personalization and learning, making it seem like it is something for you. I think memory is super, super early.” Harrison Chase Love to hear your thoughts Dhravya Shah Taranjeet Noah Shinn Nat Friedman

"If you are not working 7 days per week, you are going to lose". Corgi Insurance is the most intense workplace culture in startups. - The company works 7 days per week. - Founder (nico laqua) lives and sleeps in the office. - He built a cafe in the office because there was no local cafe that was open 24/7. - 2/3 of the first 30 team members have the Corgi logo as a tattoo. Today I went behind the scenes with Nico, who has used this culture to scale the company to a $2.6BN valuation in just two years. My condensed notes below: 1. If You Are Not Working 7 Days Per Week, You Are Going to Lose: Whatever you can get done in 5 days, you'll get more done in 6 and 7. If you are trying to solve the world’s hardest problems, a standard 5-day workweek will not cut it. 2. Work Trials Repel the Mediocre: Corgi forces candidates into mock work trials over the weekend. If seeing a full office on a Saturday scares them, they don't belong. True intensity acts as a natural filter to attract killers and repel clock-watchers. 3. Lead from the Front Lines You can’t demand 7-day weeks while sitting on a yacht. Nico sleeps 3–4 hours a night on a mattress inside the office. If you want your troops to bleed, you have to be in the trenches with them. 4. Culture Only Means One Thing: Winning Forget superficial jargon like "hackers" or "ex-founders." Strip away the corporate fluff. A great startup culture is aggressively optimized around one single word: Winning. 5. Lifespan vs. Victories Building something world-historic requires radical sacrifice. When asked if he'd rather build a trillion-dollar company and die at 50, or fail and live to 80, the answer was easy. "I would rather measure my lifespan in victories." 6. Reject the Comfort of "Quiet Quitting." If you are operating in a hyper-growth environment and your days off happen to be Saturday and Sunday every single week, you are quiet quitting. To win, you must deliberately bypass the off-ramps of personal comfort and low volatility. Corgi isn't for everyone—and that’s exactly the point.

Why harnesses need to be neutral “You want to be able to switch models. The harness can be very tied to the model, or it can be neutral. The harness’s job is to take the model and interact with everything else, including data, APIs and memory. If you build memory in a way that is linked to the harness, and the harness is linked to the model, then you are kind of stuck.” Harrison Chase Love to hear your thoughts Charles Packer Hamel Husain swyx

Who is right and who is wrong: Day One or Valar? “Everyone was saying that Day One was suing their portfolio company, which was completely wrong. It is Valar that wants declaratory judgment to move on. Sequoia came in very aggressively, and everyone had to waive their pro rata so that they could get their ownership target. Then Valar let one of their investors invest because they are strategic. This is the whole point: you are not supposed to play favourites. Having said that, when the founders decide to do this, you have just got to get with the programme. It is not your company.” Jason ✨👾SaaStr.Ai✨ Lemkin Love to hear your thoughts Shaun Maguire Chris Harvey immad Jay Kapoor

You need $500,000 a year as a salary just to live in San Francisco today! “Rents in the mediocre apartments in Dogpatch are $10,000 a month now. If it’s $10,000 a month to rent a one-bedroom at The Avalon, how much do you have to make to feel rich? A lot. You need $240K in California pre-tax just to pay the rent. You probably need $480K to feel good about yourself.” Jason ✨👾SaaStr.Ai✨ Lemkin Love to hear your thoughts Kim-Mai Cutler Garry Tan sam lessin 🏴☠️ Noah Smith 🐇🇺🇸🇺🇦🇹🇼

Amazon is right to block Muse. “One, you do not get any revenue from your ad business, and Amazon’s ad business is now larger than their e-commerce profits. The second thing is the basket size gets reduced. If I do this, I just order the thing. If I block them, they will probably come to me anyway, because I am Amazon. So I have leverage.” Rory O'Driscoll Love to hear your thoughts Juozas Kaziukėnas Freda Duan Scot Wingo, CEO ReFiBuy.ai, Poding at Retailgentic Harley Finkelstein

Why I advise not to have a comp plan “I usually advise not to have a comp plan. I usually advise doing 100% OTE for at least the first two quarters. You just do not know what you do not know. I have seen founders make a quota that gets blown out in the first six months and suddenly owe a seller multiple six figures. I have seen the inverse happen as well, where the target is not attainable and you are struggling to get momentum and a tailwind going.” Max Freeman Love to hear your thoughts Mark Roberge @AvenueTP Kyle Norton Peter Kazanjy

The Bull Case for Linear Being a $100BN Company: "Linear is the clear winner. They have built an agentic product first that allows us to build 100x more software, and that means 100x more features than ever before. Humans cannot keep up with it, and humans still have to work with agents. If every human on your team's gonna build 500 features and 1,000 issues and you have 10 people on your team, you need a process and a system of record for managing all these issues with your agents. We need a new system of record for it. The team at Linear has figured it out. We have seen an explosion, 50x more agent usage than 90 days ago. This will seem cheap when Replit's at $15BN, Lovable's at $100BN, because Linear will be the one powering them all". DeepMind stayed in London because it is better for talent than Silicon Valley. "I saw London and the UK as having incredible talent from top universities like Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial and UCL. There is a deep heritage of scientific breakthroughs and world-class thinkers. There was less competition for that talent, which made it a huge structural advantage for building DeepMind." The controversial question: How do you really calculate revenue? “We look at revenue over the last 28 days and multiply it by 13. What is very important is that we take revenue, not sales. If that is an annual subscription or annual enterprise contract, we prorate this across 12 months. It is only live revenue. We are not taking three-year enterprise deals and baking them into a $1BN figure.” Alex 🧩 Scaling Video GenAI Love to hear your thoughts Ben Murray @cjgustafson222 Dave Kellogg Kyle Poyar

My first day at Sequoia and a lesson from Doug Leone "I show up to the office at maybe 4:30 AM. I felt very happy about myself hustling to the office that day. As I'm about to push the door, I see a man on the other side, and he looks at me and goes, 'What are you doing here so early?' I tell him, 'I'm here to take my first call. What are you doing here so early?' And he says, 'I've already taken my first call.'" Why you should overpay your sales reps “The bet we took early on was to pay way above market rate for this talent. In return, we were going to expect way above market rate when it comes to output. We will pay 2X what a standard SDR is going to make, but you get to book 40, 50, 60 meetings, which is four to six times what a standard SDR has to book.” Max Freeman Love to hear your thoughts Armand Farrokh Chris Orlob . Should we invest in Jev at $10 billion? “Of course we should do it. After the last 20VC, I have decided to recommend up to 30% of the fund. Jev is already 17% of the traffic on OpenRouter and 20% of the traffic through Vercel’s router. Jev is a 70th of the price and 100 times faster. This is exactly the kind of bet we have to do. I do believe there is a 50X upside to $500BN.” Jason ✨👾SaaStr.Ai✨ Lemkin Love to hear your thoughts Erik Spock Gafni (hiring!) James Hardiman Alex Atallah Malte Ubl

What Role Does Not Exist Today But Will Be So Common in Five Years Time: "500K-1M jobs will be created for agent operators. This person will be somewhat technical. They will be deep in the AI world. They're gonna have to understand MCPs and CLIs and they are going to have to know how to write skills. It's going be this group of people that will know how to go into your marketing team or your legal team, or your operations team, or your life sciences research team and this is the person that is basically going to enable that function to get leverage from agents." The companies saying they've built their own models are bullshitting you. “Most of the people who are training their own model, almost every single time, it is a Chinese model that they have trained or added their own fine-tuning specialization on top of. Then they call it their own model. That is bullshit. You have added to it and tweaked it. You have not trained it from scratch.” Mike Cannon-Brookes 👨🏼💻🧢🇦🇺 Love to hear your thoughts Luca Soldaini 🎀 Stella Biderman Charles Goddard Teknium 🪽
