The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two Hillsborough County Public Schools bus employees following a child abuse investigation. On November 14, 2025, deputies began investigating after a witness reported a bus aide, Juanita Wright, 79, striking a 10 year old student on a school bus parked at Caminiti Exceptional School. The child is diagnosed with Autism and ADHD and is minimally verbal. Detectives reviewed video footage showing the bus aide repeatedly abusing the child on multiple days while the bus driver, Tonya Rice-Constant, laughed during the abuse. On January 26, 2026, Wright and Rice-Constant were arrested. “This case goes far beyond abuse. It reveals a level of cruelty that is deeply disturbing,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “A defenseless child was physically abused by someone entrusted with their care, while another adult failed to intervene and instead laughed. It is an inexcusable betrayal of trust and a profound lack of humanity when adults who are supposed to protect a child not only inflict harm, but also allow it to happen. In Hillsborough County, this kind of conduct will be met with the full force of the law.” More:

Just before 10:30 a.m. on July 11, 2023, HCSO deputies were called to respond to Valleyridge Court, where a concerned citizen had called 911 regarding a young child seen running across the street and into a nearby pond. Two deputies arrived at the scene and immediately began searching the water. After thoroughly looking through the thick shrubs at the edge of the pond they located the boy, who was being kept afloat by cattails, and pulled him to safety. “I shudder to think of the outcome if not for the tenacity and efforts of these deputies," said Sheriff Chad Chronister. "We will now work with the Department of Children and Families to determine if negligence played a role in this young boy's disappearance.” Deputies discovered that that the boy was also nonverbal after rescuing him. The boy did not sustain any life-threatening injuries and was reunited with his family. This investigation is ongoing; any further information will be released by the Public Affairs Office.
