I honestly wasn’t sure that I’d even want it after I fixed it. The lesson it taught me is that sometimes it’s the ones that test you, that you truly value. More than cars 10x its value. No car has made me cry before but the Pajero Evolution did. BIG TIME. So I wrote about it. … I really wrote it all for you, the people who followed its frustrating journey. I wasn’t always very open about what was going on, but this should clear up why. It is behind a paywall, so I convinced Dan and Andrew to give me a link for 2 months of free reading so you can all enjoy it. It just needs an email address - no catch and no card details and nothing in it for me other than the joy of sharing it. Please say hello in the comments ☺️ The moral of the story is. Get the truck. You get the keys to a V12 TDI Q7, you’re not NOT going to find out what it’s like to tow. And since you could’ve bought both of these new in 2010, it only felt right to put the R8 on the back. Verdict: you could probably pull a plane with this thing. Incredibly unnecessary, I already miss it.

Imagine if you will, a cavernous secret space dedicated to the car. To get to it, you have to fly through the air, travel for miles along busy, snowy highways, and persuade the gatekeeper to let you in. … a place where the sausages have part numbers. The journey will be perilous… the flight was delayed by 4 hours, the autobahn was clogged with crashed cars, and the airport has since closed, leaving me stranded in this unfamiliar land (until Monday). Back to the story. Inside these secret halls, you’ll find Volkswagen. Not just Beetles, but also Bugs. Lots of them. Not just any Bugattis; Lamborghinis with W16 hearts, cars that were driven to the Arctic Circle for testing. Cars that nearly were. Cars that never were. My Pajero Evolution is finally complete 🥹 Why this livery? Because this car tells a story. Not silver. Not Passion Red. Not a familiar Ralliart design. This is about Dakar, the world's toughest race, and it doesn't get tougher than 1985. 6,390 miles. The most hostile terrain on Earth. The Ténéré Desert crossed twice. 552 teams started. Only 101 finished. The Pajero prototypes finished 1st and 2nd overall. That single result sparked three decades of dominance and 12 Dakar victories for Mitsubishi. This car proved everything. It validated the Pajero concept, forged its reputation for durability and performance, and changed the balance of power. It broke European and American dominance and announced the rise of Japanese off-road engineering. Getting this car here felt like a Dakar of its own. At times exhausting. Often unbelievable. I translated an entire workshop manual just to make it happen. This isn't just a livery. It's history.
