25 years ago I said the autonomic nervous system (that controls the immune system) will no longer be autonomic. Many people mocked me and said I was crazy. Now we know. We showed at Radboud that after just four days of training in the mountains and 6 days of solo practice at home, the autonomic nervous system could not only be influenced, but accessed deeply and activated. I rise in the morning, and I do my breathing. I don’t do it because it’s good for me, which it is, but because it feels good. That’s why I want to do it. And then, shortly after, I take my cold shower, or an ice bath if I can. I love it, and I never skip a day, even when I am on the road. Tune out distractions. Turn off your television and leave your phone in another room when you begin the breathing exercises each morning. Give yourself enough time that time doesn’t factor into your thoughts at all. These twenty to twenty-five minutes a day require your complete attention. The mind is a neurological muscle that is able to influence your body’s molecular systems and aid its absorption of oxygen, which creates the energy you want. And if you want this muscle to function optimally, you’ve got to surrender unconditionally to the experience. You have to really go for it. You have to have the third pillar: confidence, mindset.

Start your day with a cold shower, even during winter. ❄️ I know it’s going to be cold in the morning and that those first few seconds in the cold water are going to be unpleasant because my ego tells me so. But my inner voice tells me to bloody get into that cold water because it is calling me to embrace every bit of my being. Every morning you have a choice. You can wake up carrying your bags from yesterday. Dragging all the days before it. Already tired from the weight of what you know, what you've done, what you have to do. Or you can wake up new. I choose new. I wake up and start every day as if it is my first day. Not a single past failure clouds my mind. Musings and worries of the future are completely absent. This is not denial. This is not forgetting. This is creating space. Space to paint a new canvas with the originality of the moment. Without this space, life becomes repetitive. The same thoughts loop. The same feelings return. The same patterns play out again and again. You become a machine running old programs. Conformity thrives on this repetition. But freshness breaks the pattern. I never had a teacher, and I never had lessons, other than hard Nature itself. To me the cold is like God, you could say that. I think of the cold as a noble force. It's just helping me, training me. It's bringing me back to my Inner nature the way it is meant to be. And this way I do not only endure the cold, I love the cold.
