Got ourselves a new calf this morning. Mama wanted nothing to do with him. No idea why. She's given us two or three calves before and been a good cow, but today she was done. So we brought him home. He took a bottle. He's been up walking around, alert, breathing good, good size. Just having a tough day with mom. We put him in the calf hutch and let him take it easy. The big four meatpackers did the same thing to processing infrastructure, buying up capacity until independent ranchers had nowhere to take their animals without going through someone else's bottleneck. Same mechanism. Different industry. Same result. This man's answer is to sell high and start over somewhere the math still works. That's a legitimate move. But the culture he's mourning doesn't come back once it's gone, and neither does the processing capacity, and neither do the independent ranchers once consolidation finishes the job.
