A direct message from my colleague Pawan Khera to the outgoing Assam CM

It was August 10, 2017 during the farewell to Shri. Hamid Ansari, who was retiring as Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha after a long ten year tenure. It was then most shockingly that the Prime Minister mocked Mr. Ansari, one of India's most distinguished diplomats, reducing his identity to his religion and in effect alleging that his entire professional and political achievements were because of his religious identity. The PM pretty much sang the same song in the evening farewell function in Parliament Library auditorium as well. Such a petty PM and his drum-beaters talking of insults being heaped at Constitutional authorities are hypocrites and opportunists of the worst kind. This is nothing but an absolutely pathetic attempt to divert attention from the undemocratic suspension of 144 MPs from Parliament and the shocking security breach in Lok Sabha on December 13th.

My vehicle was attacked a few minutes ago at Jumugurihat, Sunitpur by an unruly BJP crowd who also tore off the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra stickers from the windshield. They threw water and shouted anti-BJNY slogans. But we kept our composure, waved to the hooligans and sped away. This is undoubtedly the Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s doing. We are not intimidated and will soldier on.

There was a time when we were told that India would be hosting the Quad Summit (USA, Japan, Australia, and India) in Nov 2025. That is now not happening. There was a time when we were told that India would be amongst the earliest to sign a trade deal with the US. That supposed deal has become an ordeal while exports to the US decline, leading to the loss of livelihoods here. Meanwhile, President Trump has for the 57th time repeated why and how Operation Sindoor was suddenly and unexpectedly halted - with the first announcement of that stoppage coming from Washington and not New Delhi.

This is an extraordinary revelation by a top Modi government official who is currently no less than the CEO of the NITI Aayog. The official has revealed that PM Modi himself made a dastardly unconstitutional attempt to intimidate the 14th Finance Commission into letting him steal from State Governments’ share of tax revenues. The 14th Finance Commission had recommended 42%, but the newly elected Prime Minister was keen to slash this to much lesser. When the Prime Minister failed in this endeavour, his government “was forced to hastily redo its maiden full budget in 48 hours and slash funding” for social welfare programmes. Worse, this official revealed that the Modi government’s budget claims are “covered in layers and layers of attempt to cover the truth” and added he was “sure you will have a Hindenburg who will open up the [government’s] accounts if they are transparent”. The reference to Hindenburg says it all. This blatant disregard for a Constitutional body exposes the Prime Minister's real niyat: overcentralisation, absolute control and the dismantling of India’s federalism. Nor can we ignore the human impact of this attempted cornering of mandated funds for state, denying them their Constitutional right. State Governments finance everything from law and order to school education, and have had fewer sources of revenue after the introduction of the GST. This is one of the reasons Rahul Gandhi is leading the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra: to ensure political justice, strengthen federalism, and to uphold Babasaheb Ambedkar’s Constitution that begins by stating, “India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States”. #AarakshanVirodhiBJP

For days the speculation has been - will He or won't He? Will Mr. Modi go to Kuala Lumpur for the Summit or not? Now it appears certain that the PM will not go. It means the loss of so many opportunities to hug and get photo ops with world leaders or to flaunt himself as the self-styled Vishwaguru. The reason why Mr. Modi is not going is simple. He just doesn't want to be cornered by President Trump who will also be there. He refused an invitation to attend the Gaza peace summit in Egypt a few weeks back, precisely for this reason. Posting messages in praise of President Trump on social media is one thing. But to be seen hobnobbing physically with the man who has claimed 53 times that he stopped Op Sindoor and has claimed 5 times that India has promised to stop buying oil from Russia is another matter. It’s far too risky for him. The PM may well be recalling that old hit Bollywood number: Bachke re rehna re baba, bachke rehna re.

J. Robert Oppenheimer is credited with being the father of the atomic bomb. When he witnessed the first nuclear explosion in the deserts of New Mexico in the USA on July 16, 1945, by his own admission he immediately thought of a verse from the Bhagavad Gita “ Now I become Death destroyer of the worlds”. This is a reference to Chapter 11, Verse 32. Virtually all translations of the word “Kaala” in this verse render it as “Time” or “the eternal Time-Spirit”. But Oppenheimer used “Kaala” to mean “Death”. This is because he had studied Sanskrit in the early 1930s at the University of California at Berkeley under Arthur Ryder whose translation of the Bhagavad Gita had appeared in 1929. It was Ryder who had translated Kaala as Death. Incidentally, Bakhtiar Dadabhoy in his recent biography of Homi Bhabha writes that when Oppenheimer was under attack in the early 1950s for his communist leanings Bhabha after consulting Nehru sounded him out on immigrating to India. There is really no conclusive archival evidence for this, but Bhabha may well have verbally sounded Oppenheimer out. But ironically, Bernard Peters, who was betrayed as a communist by Oppenheimer to the American authorities in 1949, was invited by Bhabha to TIFR in 1951. Peters made very important scientific contributions in cosmic rays and nuclear research at TIFR before emigrating to Denmark. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1985.

The 7th Non-Aligned Summit took place without much hype and self-serving publicity in New Delhi for five days in March 1983. Incidentally, this was the Summit to which Fidel Castro brought along Gabriel Garcia Marquez as part of the Cuban delegation. Now, of course, the self-styled Vishwaguru refers to these countries as the Global South.

ISRO’s achievement today reflects a saga of continuity and is truly fantastic! In February 1962, the farsightedness of Homi Bhabha and Vikram Sarabhai created INCOSPAR (Indian National Committee for Space Research). Incidentally, one of the first recruits to INCOSPAR was none other than Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. In August 1969, the development-oriented Vikram Sarabhai established ISRO. Between 1972 and 1984, Satish Dhawan provided extraordinary scientific, technological and managerial leadership to decisively shape the ISRO that we know today. Along with him, we remember Brahm Prakash, the great metallurgist who made fundamental contributions to both our nuclear and space programmes—perhaps the only scientist-engineer to have done so. After Dhawan, came a series of Chairmen including U R Rao, who made their own distinctive contributions to ISRO. ISRO’s accomplishments have always been anchored in self-reliance. They reflect phenomenal team work, partnerships and enterprise. The entire world is looking up to ISRO today, acknowledging its achievements, and for us Indians, it is a matter of special pride.

It was not unknown that Dr. Urjit Patel as the Governor of the RBI had opposed the electoral bonds scheme of the Modi government. Now the memoir of the-then Finance Secretary confirms that Dr. Patel insisted electoral bonds should only be issued by the RBI and that too in digital mode — ensuring transparency. Dr. Patel was absolutely right! The electoral bonds scheme is one of the most diabolical acts of the Modi government undermining our electoral system and democracy. It is not only a method to convert black money into white overwhelmingly in favour of the BJP, but also ensures a financial chokehold of the BJP via the government over political donations of business groups — leading towards economic and political concentration of wealth. But as Rahul Gandhi recently pointed out, the INDIA parties have come together to defeat this complete takeover of the state machinery by the BJP.

My tribute to the remarkable Indian scientists and technologists along with successive Prime Ministers who contributed to India’s glorious space journey that began on 22nd February, 1962. To correct the complete distortion of facts that is being spread by the Leader of the House and the BJP that this glorious journey and the competencies, capabilities and capacities of India’s successful space program built over six decades began only in 2014. Full speech:

Zohran Mamdani, the newly-elected Mayor of New York City, has just quoted from Nehru's immortal Tryst with Destiny speech. Actually these very words of Nehru had also been used by Alex Salmond in his campaign for the independence of Scotland in November 2013

Democracy is under threat. This video is from TODAY in Ukhrul District, Outer Manipur. Voters are being forced to vote only for the NPF, the BJP’s alliance partner, rather than the Congress. The security forces are standing there mutely as our democracy is hijacked. These are the most important elections of our lifetime
