Opened the field I have been waiting for, this is the field with only 30 units of N applied to the soil. ROI field, learning to get better is always the goal. I can definitely say this is how we will farm now! Two years in a row, low inputs, better management has paid well here in SD!

Another opportunity to gather information today. We can not continue to focus on NPK only and loading the system up to magical ppm levels, and then wonder how we are going survive. We need to focus on a season long approach with those fertilizer dollars. How do we feed the back half as well or better than the first half of the growing season? I’m Not saying NPK is not important to your success as it is. But the big 3 can’t be the only focus. Do you Audit your fertilizer program? I feel we should all be asking ourselves these questions. As change is needed.

Decided to make this video to address a lot of the questions that have been sent the last few days. Nutrient efficiency - what happened? I’m sure someone will tear this apart, claiming it’s wrong. This is my opinion only, based off studying literature and the crop. I’ve spent 20+ years of watching the crop and comparing plant uptake results to soil lab reports.

Mason does an excellent job explaining exactly why we are seeing what we are seeing with the low nitrogen (ROI) plots and the variability of the response to being short on N. If done right, zones aren’t just a pretty picture. Baseline Rx is the start to a better more efficient fertilizer program!

Farming on a tight budget. How much N is really needed? Corn on Corn, No manure spread etc. Eliminate plant stress the best you can, supplement micros when needed. And pay close attention & be prepared to add more, the remaining needed nutrients will be provided with Foliar app!

In Ag…… let’s be honest we know so very little, we just hope to capture a bit of knowledge each opportunity we get. We should learn from one another not cry about someone’s ideas because they are different then what you learned or were taught. History teaches us a lot, but it doesn’t mean you can’t move forward, it’s a constant cycle of learning. And no one learns without others! It’s a team game that we are all in together. The guy that says I can’t trust that guy as he sells that seed or that fertilizer or that foliar is going to see rough times. As learning is opening your eyes and ears to ideas, and adding them to your library full of knowledge from your own experiences. That’s how something improves. It’s not the same thing every year and it’s not changing everything all at once. It’s bringing ideas and practices together to make it all work and bridge the gap.

An older video I ran across today, it does a good job explaining why some soils can get by on .3 units of N and the next soil needs 1 lb of added N to create a bushel. Obviously this is a deeper topic then what is covered in this 2 minutes, but it’s an important part of it.
