Proud to announce that Ginkgo Bioworks was awarded a $47M contract to kick off President Trump's new Genesis Mission and build the world's largest autonomous lab at Pacific Northwest National Lab! I was honored to join Secretary Chris Wright as he commissioned the first phase of the lab yesterday at PNNL 🇺🇸🤖 Autonomous labs allow scientists to order experiments just by asking for them and are a key component for AI models to accelerate science at the scale outlined in the Genesis Project by Director Michael Kratsios, Dario Gil, Sriram Krishnan. More below, including some behind the scenes footage 😀

Was fortunate to ribbon-cut the first Autonomous Lab as part of the Genesis Mission with Secretary Chris Wright. Scientists should direct autonomous labs to do their lab work 24/7 in our national labs! This is how the US keeps our lead in science - amazing leadership from U.S. Department of Energy, Director Michael Kratsios, Darío Gil, and Sriram Krishnan 🇺🇸 Excited to see how the autonomous labs program expands!

Come visit our Autonomous lab for a tour ! Its crazy to see in person — but I made a little behind the scenes video on what makes an autonomous lab different from a traditional lab automation workcell! Sign up here for a tour next week at 25 Drydock ave in boston !

AI + lab robotics will change experimental science. 1. Data (both positive and negative results) shared daily among a team of AI agents pursuing different hypothesis 2. Lab robotics running 24/7 with lab experiments written in code that are easily reproducible Human scientists can shepherd the whole process with regular readouts of progress (sort of like every scientists getting to operate as principle investigator) -- these are real advantages over how we do this work today. Enjoyed chatting about it with Pat Grady and Sonya Huang 🐥 at Sequoia Capital!

Agree, this is an important point from Michael Baym. A Waymo is an autonomous car even if a human is in the back seat telling it where to go. Same for an Autonomous Lab, scientists can tell it what protocols to do -- quick autonomous lab explainer in this video. It's really about solving for variable lab work, not about taking the scientist out of the loop.

Love the tech at Aerska ! Jack O'Meara and the team have a novel approach to get molecules across the blood-brain barrier -- huge unlock for brain diseases like Alzheimer's. We've been lucky to work with them using our Ginkgo Bioworks Datapoints service to generate large functional genomic data sets to help Aerska develop better siRNA medicines!!

Awesome to hear Garry Tan talking about a Y Combinator office in Cambridge ! Next step is run a Cambridge YC batch in the summer! I’d be a part-time partner for that batch. Bet Brian Halligan would too. This is great for YC: (1) pick off more MIT/harvard/etc founders earlier (2) signal to California govt that if they go nuts on wealth tax there’s other places to go (3) Still do demo day in CA, it would work great! This is the summer to do it! Cmon Garry Tan 😀😀😀

Awesome being on the Sequoia Capital Training Data podcast with Pat Grady and Sonya Huang 🐥. Topic links in the 🧵 The most human part of intelligence is curiosity, and science is formalized curiosity. If we want AGI — doing the work of science is the training set. Fun to talk history of Ginkgo Bioworks, our project with OpenAI where GPT-5 ran our Autonomous Lab, what new biotech apps are coming, and more. Also — you (or your moltbot) can order experiments from Ginkgo Bioworks Cloud Lab if you don't have your own lab or buy our robots to make your own autonomous lab. Technical details of our OpenAI partnership also in 🧵

Really enjoyed being on the Accelerate Science Now podcast with Adeline DeYoung! Here's the part of the interview where I talk about why the US needs to lean into total lab automation + AI if we're going to compete with China in the long run. Full link to podcast below 👇
