Ajax’s first flight 🥹

Some people were wondering if Ajax always comes when I call. Here’s the answer:

We have a wild hedgehog who lives in our garden and is friends with our cat (this isn’t their first meeting, they know each other well)

My plans for the bank holiday weekend didn’t involve becoming the proud mother of a baby magpie but anyway here I am.

At this rate, Ajax might learn how to use tools before he learns how to feed himself.

With hindsight this was actually a completely predictable outcome of wearing big shiny earrings while fostering a baby magpie. I might need to tone down my jewellery while he is around!

He likes to watch documentaries about birds.

Each day, Ajax has some new classes in the garden. Today’s class was Catching Worms 🪱(he scored a B- )

We spent the morning sitting in the garden doing some birdwatching. ☀️ We saw two great spotted woodpeckers, a blue tit feeding her chicks in the tree, and a pair of wood pigeons mating. Ajax is learning a lot!

Update: I found him some mealworms, earthworms, and a fly. He also likes egg.

THRILLING update. Ajax just learnt a new skill: ✨ Picking things up ✨ I think he’s as excited as I am.

I spent my lunch break setting up a foraging table for Ajax. Do you think he likes it?

Ajax continues to strengthen his eye-beak coordination, and is now really great at picking up pieces of wood. Not quite so good at picking up worms.

Happy to share that the little magpie is now named Ajax, and he’s doing really well. 😊

I make tea from a wild plant used by the Ancient Greeks and Romans for medicine and beekeeping 🌿

Ajax has decided that he is much better at catching leaves than insects, and here he is tasting an apple leaf (maybe deciding whether he will be a vegetarian?)
