Seismic dampers absorb the movement of a building during an earthquake to prevent injury and minimize structural damage. Dampers diffuse energy to stabilize the building. The role of a leader is similar—to be a source of consistency, stabilizing the group through the ups and downs of the journey. A parent’s ability to stabilize the family during adversity helps the children. A coach’s ability to stabilize the team during a losing streak helps the players. An executive’s ability to stabilize the company through massive organizational changes helps the employees. A leader’s response to turbulence sets the tone for the group. “Calm is contagious.”
