Nithya Raman said policing under Daryl Gates was the “gold standard” for LAPD. Daryl Gates was the LAPD Chief who militarized the department, led indiscriminate sweeps targeting Black communities, and cultivated the aggressive culture that led to the brutal beating of Rodney King. LA still lives with that harm. Leaders who don’t understand our history risk repeating it. Is this who you want in City Hall? Nithya treats protecting immigrant families and protecting Black Angelenos from police abuse as competing priorities. Our city must do both. I organized in South LA against the abuses of Gates’s LAPD, and I continue to stand up for immigrant families today.
