I have immense respect for our police personnel, especially as the son of a police officer myself. However, I would like to remind them that their duty is to uphold the law with integrity and impartiality, not to act under the influence of any political leader, including Suvendu Adhikari The police must serve the people without bias, discrimination, or political colour, and remain committed only to justice and the Constitution.

This is not a madrasa — from tomorrow, no one will be allowed to enter the college wearing a burqa.’ Such threatening remarks by individuals allegedly backed by BJP-linked hooligan elements expose the dangerous rise of aggressive majoritarian politics after assuming power. When women from minority communities are targeted and their religious identity is openly attacked in educational spaces, it raises serious concerns about their safety, dignity, and constitutional rights in Bengal. Is this the kind of ‘change’ people were promised? Place: Azad Hind College, Domjur, Howrah

The duty of a government can never be to run a circus. Nor is it the responsibility of the state to provide spectacles for public entertainment. A government’s foremost obligation is to function in accordance with the Constitution and the rule of law. When excessive and unchecked power is handed over to the police administration, it often awakens the deepest forms of brutality within institutions. A sense of savage triumph begins to replace justice, and unfortunately, such displays also amuse and satisfy a section of society. But none of this brings honour to the Constitution. I do not support or justify the crimes of any offender. However, even a hardened criminal cannot be paraded through a marketplace with ropes tied around them. Such acts may satisfy the cruel excitement of some people and validate institutional excesses, but they are a clear violation of both the law and the basic principles of human rights. If a government begins to behave like a circus troupe rather than a constitutional authority, the people of West Bengal may face grave suffering in the days to come. On the issue of rebellion within the party, I can only say this: the rebel MPs chose to visit Bhupender Yadav’s residence, and even the Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, was present there. The message is clear—they have effectively aligned themselves with the BJP. They have chosen to replace Mamata Banerjee with Narendra Modi as their political leader. I would invite each of these MPs to return to their constituencies and face the grassroots workers and the people who elected them. Let them listen to what the people have to say about their actions. What is deeply concerning is that democratic values are steadily being eroded. Dissent is being suppressed, and an atmosphere of political intimidation is taking hold. Democracy is under strain, while authoritarian tendencies are becoming increasingly visible in West Bengal.

If I had made any disrespectful remarks during an active session of Parliament, why was the matter not immediately brought to the notice of the Hon’ble Speaker at that very moment? Kakoli Madam certainly has every right to raise a complaint, but it is equally important to clarify when exactly the alleged incident took place and why no objection was raised then. In the changing political climate, there now appears to be an unhealthy competition among the so-called “good Trinamool leaders” over who can attack the Trinamool Congress more aggressively in order to appear morally superior. However, I too shall write to the Hon’ble Speaker and respectfully ask why sanction for prosecution has still not been granted in the Narada corruption case against the individual who was seen on camera accepting money, and against whom the CBI had already filed a chargesheet.

The spontaneous public outrage among women over the 12-page Annapurna Bhandar application form reflects growing disillusionment with the BJP’s pre-election promises. People have begun to realize that these assurances were little more than empty rhetoric. As many are sarcastically asking, “To receive ₹3,000, will we eventually have to submit a death certificate as well?” The cumbersome requirements have only reinforced public skepticism, and ordinary citizens are increasingly rejecting the BJP’s approach. Buddhist monks have long been regarded as symbols of peace, compassion, and harmony across the world. Yet, under Maharashtra’s double-engine BJP government, we are witnessing the disturbing sight of monks standing in front of bulldozers, pleading and protesting to protect Lord Buddha’s statue and their places of worship. It is deeply unfortunate that a government ( BJP) claiming to uphold religious values is perceived as hurting the sentiments of an entire community. At the same time, the livelihoods of countless hawkers and small vendors are being affected. Respect for all faiths, compassion, coexistence, and humanity are among the core values associated with Sanatan Dharma. Actions that appear to disregard these principles raise serious questions about the commitment to those ideals. Faith should unite people, not become a source of fear or distress. A group of young Muslim men had gone to Canning to visit the area when they were allegedly confronted by some BJP-backed miscreants wearing saffron gamchas and shouting “Jai Shri Ram” slogans. After asking their names and learning that they belonged to the Muslim community, the attackers reportedly began abusing them, branding them as “Bangladeshi” and “jihadi,” before brutally assaulting them. The situation became even more disturbing when the victims were allegedly forced to lower their pants so that the attackers could determine their religion. Such acts are not only deeply humiliating but also strike at the very foundations of human dignity and constitutional values. The Preamble of the Constitution declares India to be a secular nation, founded on respect for all faiths and equal rights for all citizens. Is this the culture that the BJP seeks to promote in Bengal? Is hatred, religious profiling, and vigilantism now being projected as Bengal’s identity? Shame BJP West Bengal BJP

In 2023, I stood by Ms. Moitra when she was under fire in Parliament — I did so out of conviction, not compulsion. Today, she repays that support by calling me a misogynist. I owe the nation an apology for having defended someone who clearly lacks basic gratitude. Let people see her words for what they are and judge accordingly. BJP supporters are allegedly preventing poor cattle sellers from trading their cows in local markets, all in the name of “Gau Mata.” Yet, official data shows that India ranks among the top beef-exporting countries in the world. What a striking irony — when a poor farmer or cattle trader tries to earn a livelihood, suddenly the cow becomes “sacred”; but when wealthy businesses profit from large-scale exports, where does that sentiment disappear? This selective outrage exposes the deep hypocrisy behind such politics. BJP Bengal

Today’s attack on Abhishek Banerjee is a stark reflection of the complete breakdown of law and order in West Bengal. It exposes how deeply democratic values have eroded under an ineffective administration. Targeting a sitting Member of Parliament and a representative of the opposition with eggs, bricks, and other projectiles is unacceptable in any democratic society. His security had already been reduced, making this incident even more alarming. A government that fails to ensure the safety of elected representatives cannot claim to be upholding democratic principles or maintaining public order. Such incidents raise serious questions about governance, accountability, and the rule of law. I strongly condemn this attack and express my deep disapproval of the BJP government for allowing the situation to deteriorate to such an extent. BJP West Bengal #DGPolice

A state cannot be governed through fear or police excesses. Democracy cannot survive under autocratic rule or politically biased policing. Law enforcement must act impartially, beyond party colours and political interests. When BJP-backed miscreants attack Trinamool workers, or when bulldozers are used without prior legal notice, can that ever be called justice? We are not afraid of opposition politics or intimidation. If the Honourable CM says that 12,000 young men will be sent to jail, then we will stand beside those 12,000 youths and take the fight to the streets. Say it loud: The struggle to protect democracy will continue.

If even a Senior Advocate and former Chief Minister can face such hostility and lack of security within the premises of the High Court, one can only imagine the situation ordinary Trinamool workers and supporters are confronting across the state. A court of law is a place meant for justice, dignity, and constitutional values — not for shouting derogatory slogans or branding individuals as “thieves.” The continuous disrespectful and insulting conduct displayed by Suryaneel Babu towards Mamata Banerjee since the day of the election counting deserves strong condemnation. After Mr. Suvendu Adhikari assumed responsibility, how does the government explain this alarming lack of security and decorum even inside the judicial premises? If such incidents can occur at the High Court itself, serious questions naturally arise about the safety and democratic atmosphere prevailing across Bengal today. Suvendu Adhikari BJP West Bengal

Reports from Azad Hind College suggest that students are facing intimidation and fear allegedly at the hands of BJP-backed miscreants, with Muslim women students being particularly targeted and harassed. At a time when assurances of peace and normalcy are being publicly made, such incidents raise serious questions. It would be important to hear the response of Samik Bhattacharya on these disturbing developments.

BJP-backed hooligans are vandalising the office of the Trinamool Youth Congress. So this is the kind of politics Bengal BJP stands for — leaders preach peace and non-violence in public, while their cadres continue attacking political opponents with impunity. Is this what they called the “government of change”? A change marked by intimidation, vandalism, and political violence. BJP West Bengal

Just 15 meters away from Chanditala Police Station, while I was on my way to submit a deputation, BJP-backed miscreants launched a violent attack on me. A hard object was hurled directly at my head, causing injuries to my head and pain in my chest. The nature of the assault clearly suggests an attempt to inflict serious harm, if not take my life. If an opposition Member of Parliament can be attacked in broad daylight, in full view of the police and so close to a police station, one must ask: where is the security for ordinary party workers and supporters? Yesterday it was Abhishek Banerjee, today it is me. Such attacks will not intimidate us or force us into silence. Our struggle against the BJP government’s culture of political intimidation, misuse of state machinery, and the steady erosion of democratic values will continue unabated. We have always stood with the people and fought for their interests. We were on the streets yesterday, we are on the streets today, and we will remain there tomorrow—continuing our fight for the rights and welfare of ordinary citizens.
