Forty three years after Declan Flynn was murdered, I stood in the Dáil today, during Pride month, as a gay man and said what many won’t. This movement has been hijacked. It no longer speaks for the people who built it. One flag flies over this State. The Tricolour. It unites us. It does not divide us into identity groups waiting for their month. We marched for freedom from fear. Not to become props for somebody else’s politics.

Today I'm delighted to announce my first ever Private Members' Bill has been settled by the Oireachtas, and ready to go before the Dail: the Criminal Records, Recording of Nationality and Immigration Status, Bill 2026. This Bill will require An Garda Síochána to compile statistical data on the nationality and immigration status of convicted persons, published annually to the Oireachtas and the public. Transparency and accountability. That's what this is about. No more guesswork, no more spin. Just the facts, published for everyone to see. This is only the start. #ireland #cork

I was on Newstalk this morning discussing something that's been on my mind for a while: why does Ireland ask so little of people applying for citizenship, when almost every other country in Europe asks for more? Spain requires a language exam and a civics test with a 60% pass mark. Germany requires B1 language plus a 33-question test on German society and law. France introduced a mandatory civic exam this year, alongside a B2 language requirement for naturalisation. Ireland asks for neither. This conversation has been prompted by the Bouchaker case, and I want to be careful here: I'm not saying that case proves language causes crime, and the Taoiseach was right to make that point. But it does show up a wider gap in our system, one where someone can gain citizenship without ever demonstrating a working knowledge of the language or the civic life of this country. That's not about being harsh. It's about bringing Ireland's rules in line with what the rest of Europe already does. Have a listen to the interview and let me know what you think.

I spoke today at the March for Life. This is not about shouting. It is about facing reality. Over 10,000 abortions took place in Ireland last year. Behind every number is a woman under pressure. Ask the real question. Why are so many women reaching this point? Housing. Cost of living. Fear. Lack of support. If those pressures remain, nothing changes. We cannot allow ambition to be reduced to a modular unit in a back garden. Young people in Ireland were raised to build lives of their own. Not to remain in their parents’ homes because the system has failed them. Owning a home was once a realistic goal. It must be again. I stands for a country where young people can afford their own front door, their own space, and their own future. Last week I asked the Tánaiste a direct question in the Dáil. Who reviewed a reading list, linked from a Healthy Ireland library initiative, before it went into libraries serving twelve-year-olds. A list that includes material with explicit sexual content. His answer: he doesn’t know. No Minister. No department. No agency. Nobody has put their hand up to say they signed off on this material reaching children’s shelves. A week on, parents still have no answer from the Tánaiste of this country. Yesterday in Dáil Éireann I asked a simple question: who is telling the truth? Minister Norma Foley has publicly stated that she had no knowledge of the book “What’s the T.” Yet former Fine Gael Minister Charlie Flanagan has stated that he personally spoke to her in 2023 and asked her to read it. Both accounts cannot be correct. I put that question directly to Minister Peter Burke, standing in for the Taoiseach and Tánaiste. His response was that he could not comment because he knew nothing about the matter. That is not accountability. When there are two conflicting public accounts from senior political figures, the public is entitled to a clear answer. Silence is not an answer. This week I joined Cork City Councillor Noel O’Flynn in Cork City Centre to see what is happening on our main retail streets. We found 22 vape and phone shops across Patrick Street, Oliver Plunkett Street and the surrounding area. Several premises had no visible over-18 signage. In some cases, staff could not confirm the legal requirement that vaping products cannot be sold to under-18s. That is a serious concern. Cork deserves a vibrant and diverse city centre. Our principal shopping streets should not be dominated by one type of retail outlet. Today in the Dáil I raised a disturbing case. A vulnerable woman with an intellectual disability was sexually assaulted. The offender was convicted. During sentencing the court noted the “difficulties for a foreign national serving a sentence in this jurisdiction”, which was taken into account. Many people across Ireland find this troubling. A woman will live with the consequences of this crime for the rest of her life. Victims must come first. I asked the Tánaiste a simple question. Should the nationality of an offender ever be a factor which reduces the sentence for a serious sexual crime? I was disappointed by the intervention from members of the Socialist Party. In my view their contribution focused more on defending the position of the offender than on the impact on the victim. Justice must be blind to nationality. Today in the Dáil I raised serious concerns about Ireland guaranteeing a €90 billion EU loan to Ukraine. Where will this money go. How does this square with Irish neutrality. And has Ireland not already done enough. Ireland has shown solidarity. Refugees welcomed. Aid given. Support delivered. But charity must begin at home. We have homelessness, fuel poverty, and working people paying USC while struggling to survive. I was extremely disappointed, but not surprised, to see the Labour Party side with Government on this motion. A government’s first duty is to its own people.

Today I challenged the Minister on sentencing for child sexual abuse material offences. Possession is not a victimless crime. Every image is abuse. Every download repeats that harm. Yet suspended sentences continue. The Minister will not introduce minimum sentences. That is wrong. • No national data on sentencing outcomes • Estimated 50–150 suspended sentences in recent years • Many cases avoid immediate custody Where is the deterrent? Today in the Dáil, I raised a question of public finance and public accountability. Ireland has transferred €269 million to programmes linked to Palestine and Ukraine. I asked one question only. How does the Government guarantee that this money reaches its intended recipients, is spent as approved, and is fully traceable from allocation to outcome. The Minister’s response was imprecise. He referenced charities and schools. He did not outline audit mechanisms, compliance controls, reporting structures, or consequences where standards are not met. That is not good enough when public money is involved. I have submitted a detailed set of Parliamentary Questions seeking clarity on governance, oversight, intermediaries, verification, and value for money. For context, €269 million could deliver almost 700 average three-bedroom homes in Ireland. This is not an argument against humanitarian assistance. Ireland should assist people facing war and humanitarian crisis. This is an argument for standards. Aid must be accountable. Funds must be traceable. Outcomes must be measured. Oversight must be explicit. It is also legitimate to ask a further question. When Ireland faces unresolved crises in housing, healthcare, disability services, and childcare, the public is entitled to an honest, evidence-based discussion about balance and priorities. That is not ideology. That is responsible governance. We owe compassion abroad. We also owe responsibility at home. Both must stand together.
