I built a custom landscape shader with 4 unique paintable material types, all using POM for fake 3D. I still remember being blown away by parallax mapping in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion (2004), though a much simpler form of it.

This individual is basically asking about how the devs at DICE handled lightmaps in Battlefield 4 (baked global illumination) when it came to dynamic events like buildings collapsing, which is an excellent question! In the video I provided here, you can see lightmaps on the building, particularly the balconies. Essentially, when it’s time for the building to collapse, a dynamic animated version of the building is immediately instantiated in the exact location of the old one. You can actually see this happening too. Before the building collapses, you can see a weird flicker effect. That flicker is the lightmaps disappearing entirely, because a different version of the same building that lightmaps won’t function on replaces the static light mapped building. Really cool stuff!

Yesterday, protesters at the Iowa Capitol were arrested for standing against an anti-trans bill—normal people, just trying to live their lives in peace. My great aunt and uncle didn’t think anything would happen in Germany (thankfully my grandfather and his family saw through the bullshit and left), and less than a decade later, they were worked to death in camps. So now I’m having to seriously consider leaving the state I call home because Iowa sees my trans friends and family—the people I love—as subhuman. And it won’t stop there. Trans people are already being erased at the federal level. The only real solution is to get out of the country entirely, which is something I never imagined I’d have to seriously consider. These are people who go to work, pay their taxes, and take care of the people they love. Sure, there are bad people within the community but is that not every community? And now, they’re being legislated out of existence because this country has decided that some lives are worth less than others. I’m ashamed to live in a nation that prides itself on freedom while systematically stripping it away from the most vulnerable.
