Kubrick’s international cut of The Shining (1980) runs about 25 minutes shorter than the U.S. cut.

Lolita (1962) was shaped by censorship. Kubrick could not show the full darkness of Nabokov’s novel, so he turned it into suggestion: looks, pauses, and dialogue carrying what the camera was not allowed to say.

Barry Lyndon (1975) looks so soft because Kubrick did not want normal daylight; he wanted the right daylight. Many outdoor scenes had to wait for cloudy skies, proving that even the weather had to fit the painting.

Eyes Wide Shut security was unusually strict. A photographer caught Tom Cruise next to what looked like a random older man. It was Kubrick, photographed for the first time in 17 years. After that, set security was tripled.
