"I think there’s a very high chance we end up in some kind of fiscal crisis, with bond markets taking fright, if we don’t do this welfare form" "It would be like what happened in the 1970s" Having laid out proposals to slash welfare spending by a huge £50 billion a year, Reform Shadow Chancellor Robert Jenrick says unless welfare is radically overhauled, the UK faces a re-run of the 1976 IMF bailout. "I think there’s a very high chance we end up in some kind of fiscal crisis, with bond markets taking fright, if we don’t do this welfare form ... it would be like what happened in the 1970s" Having laid out proposals to slash welfare spending by a huge £50 billion a year, Reform Shadow Chancellor Robert Jenrick says unless welfare is radically overhauled, the UK faces a re-run of the 1976 IMF bailout. In the clip below, I suggest that if Jenrick was serious about welfare reform, he would scrap the "triple lock" – which will soon add £15bn a year to the cost of the basic state pension. He disagrees. When The Facts Change - Ep.27 "Only radical welfare reform and deep cost cuts can save Britain from a spectacular fiscal crisis” Liam Halligan interviews Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP, Reform Shadow Chancellor. Having laid out proposals to slash welfare spending by a huge £50 billion a year, Reform Shadow Chancellor Robert Jenrick says unless welfare is radically overhauled, the UK faces a re-run of the 1976 IMF bailout. In the clip below, Jenrick argues that the UK's welfare system is making lots of his constituents, and workers across the country, "pretty angry", when they see people claiming benefits and avoiding work "who don't have a good reason to be claiming". “They Want To Shut Us Down” Inside The Battle Over Britain’s Most Controversial School - When The Facts Change, with Liam Halligan, Ep.27 Katharine Birbalsingh - Katharine Birbalsingh - joins me to discuss the extraordinary success of Michaela School, a non-selective state school in a tough North London neighbourhood — and why its strict approach to discipline and teaching has put her at odds with Britain’s education establishment. Michaela achieves exam results among the very best in the country. Why does a school delivering such remarkable outcomes face so much opposition? And why does Birbalsingh think new Education Secretary Lucy Powell will “destroy our schools”? Watch the full conversation on YouTube via the link in next message 🧵1/2

💥💥New "When The Facts Change" Episode 28 - full-length interview with Robert Jenrick 📺🎙️ In a wide-ranging discussion with Liam Halligan, the Rt Robert Jenrick MP issues a stark warning that without a radical overhaul of the welfare state, "Britain faces a spectacular financial crisis". The Reform Shadow Chancellor details his party’s plans to save £50 billion a year on welfare spending. Key proposals include restricting most benefits to British citizens only, overhauling cash disability payments and replacing personal independence payments (PIP) with a tighter system. Additionally, long-term unemployed claimants fit to work must complete 20 hours of community work weekly or lose benefits, Jenrick also expresses deep concern about the state of the UK’s public finances, insisting that unless significant welfare savings are made along the lines he is outlining, “Britain faces a spectacular financial crisis,” similar to when an insolvent UK was bailed-out in 1976, going “cap-in-hand” to the International Monetary Fund. “If we don’t do these welfare reforms, I think there’s a very high chance we’ll end up in some kind of fiscal crisis, with the bond markets taking fright,” he says. “Bond yields would rise to unsustainable levels, leading to reforms of this nature or even stronger ones being forced upon us by external forces, by market participants. It would be like what happened in the 1970s – and would be far, far more unpalatable than anything I’ve set out.” “There is a good chance that could happen and what is even more certain is that the alternative is just continued economic decline under Labour. The government is seriously understating the danger of all this coming to a head in some kind of spectacular financial crisis. 🧵1/2 Intro film below and link to full interview in next message.

Here’s some genius music. Legendary “Irish trad” fiddler Kevin Burke - London-born to Sligo parents - plays “Lucy’s Fling” at the Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith. Am very pleased to be here supporting live Irish folk music - a genre close to my heart and that of many British people of proud Irish origin.
