You've seen the photos, so here's a video. Some of the paint has dried, but I'm pretty sure some of it never will.

Paid for a full days parking in this Thurrock Council car park. The machine prints out the reg for the previous car on the ticket - so you would have to pay for two tickets to get one with your reg on it. They've given me a ticket for it despite one being displayed as being paid for the entire day (with the wrong reg) because their equipment doesn't work properly. Utter rubbish.

I wouldn't usually post this here, as this is normally about classic cars and the journey of ownership, but I've just spent the day at the ITAI (Institute of Traffic Accident) Crash Test and Research Day, and considering that if you're seeing this you probably drive cars or have an interest in them, that it might be pertinent to see what it looks like when it all goes wrong. These were all set up in a safe environment with no one harmed, to gather more information to assist collision investigators in real world investigations. The reason for me posting is that even though I'm very used to seeing broken or crashed cars, the X-Type involved in the first part of this video really did surprise me at how poorly it performed. It was struck by the Vauxhall at 60mph, with the Jaguar stationary and the Astra T-Boning it. After that, you'll see a BMW 5-series (fear not, it had a cracked block), impacting a Ford Focus CC at 73mph, which appears to fare better thanks to its reinforced floor pan, though the reality is the passenger cell is still greatly affected. Just some food for thought for the next time you get in the car.

I've managed to hit a lot of mileage goals in the past few years, including 200,000 miles in a couple of cars. However, I don't think I have ever rolled a 5 digit readout back to zero before. Because I am sad, I even managed to plan it so I could film it rather than pull over and take a photo like I usually would 🤣

Took the 5 back today after 800+ miles in the past week, so here's some final ramblings on it. The short point is that I really enjoyed it. It's good fun to drive, plenty of power, range is fine, comfortable, etc. I'm spoilt by driving '70s/'80s luxury saloons so the ride felt firm to me, but it's not harsh, either. I found myself not wanting to give it back, which for someone who doesn't really get on with modern cars, says a lot. I also questioned whether the Alpine would really offer that much more... I'm not so sure. Thanks again Jim Holder for organising this, it has proved very helpful!

I had an unexpected treat a few Thursdays ago when my 'bargain' Silver Shadow came out of storage and into the workshop, and today it's time for another treat, with the Maserati moving to see what caused that brake failure in Spain last year. I'll bet you can't guess the answer...
