New satellite navigation interference observed near the coast of Ras Al Khaimah A new satellite navigation interference pattern was detected off the coast of Ras Al Khaimah starting at 15:00 UTC yesterday. Unlike the typical single-point clustering commonly associated with signal jamming, this interference creates the appearance of vessels moving in a straight line toward the Strait of Hormuz, even though the vessels are not actually following that trajectory. Further analysis using #MarineTraffic playback confirms that this movement is artificial. Vessel tracks show clear inconsistencies when compared with simultaneous vessel movements and reported headings, indicating that the apparent transit is the result of navigation interference rather than real vessel activity. From a market monitoring perspective, Kpler analysts have implemented enhanced monitoring protocols to identify and exclude erroneous insights generated by spoofed tracks, such as false Strait of Hormuz crossings or incorrect port calls, ensuring that market signals continue to reflect genuine vessel activity.

Tanker traffic through Strait of Hormuz down by 90% Analysis of vessel activity indicates tanker transits are now around 90% lower than last week. Matt Wright, Principal Freight Analyst at Kpler, explains: "Unlike several other vessel segments where movements have largely ceased, some tankers are still travelling east and west through the strait, with a number of voyages occurring under AIS blackouts."

CMA CGM containership passes Strait of Hormuz A French-owned containership has successfully transited the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first French-owned vessel to pass through the waterway since hostilities escalated at the end of February. According to #MarineTraffic data, the Malta-flagged CMA CGM Kribi crossed the strait on 2 April after updating her AIS destination twice, first from “CGPNR” to “French Owner” at 12:41 UTC, and then to “Owner France” at 13:18 UTC. The vessel had originally been bound for Pointe-Noire, Republic of the Congo. The 255-metre container ship, built in 2014 and with a capacity of 5,380 TEU, departed Ghantoot, UAE, on 28 March at 08:59 UTC. The vessel is currently underway using engine and sailing south along the coast of Oman at around 10.3 knots, with a reported draught of 13 metres, indicating she is laden.

Strait of Hormuz transit and risk monitor Transit activity in the Strait of Hormuz strengthened over the weekend, with crossings reaching 10 on Saturday and 11 on Sunday, according to #MarineTraffic data. Sanctioned vessels accounted for almost half of Sunday’s movements, highlighting a shift in traffic composition alongside rising volumes. No verified physical attacks or incidents during this period, despite elevated geopolitical rhetoric. While this suggests near term operational stability, evolving political developments may still shape vessel behaviour and risk exposure in the days ahead. Read the latest analysis by Dimitris Ampatzidis, Kpler Senior Risk & Compliance Analyst: Here’s a playback of vessel activity in the Strait of Hormuz over the past two days.

March crossings through Strait of Hormuz led by liquid tankers According to #MarineTraffic and Kpler data, a total of 220 vessels transited the Strait of Hormuz during March across the dry bulk, liquids, LPG and LNG segments. Liquid tankers accounted for 111 crossings, or 51% of the total, followed by 82 dry bulk vessels (37%) and 27 LPG carriers (12%). No LNG crossings were recorded in March. Traffic remained skewed toward west-to-east movements out of the Gulf, which made up 149 crossings, or 68% of the monthly total. East-to-west transits into the Gulf accounted for 71 crossings, or 32%, highlighting an uneven flow pattern through one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints.

Capesize bulkers collide in Singapore Strait Two capesize bulk carriers have collided in the Singapore Strait, according to media reports. The Marshall Islands-flagged Cape XL, a 181,500-dwt bulker departing Singapore Anchorage for Qingdao, China, reportedly came into contact with the Panama-flagged Huge Kumano, a 208,800-dwt bulker on a voyage from Porto Sudeste, Brazil. According to #MarineTraffic data, Cape XL departed Singapore Anchorage at 21:35 UTC on 19 May and later updated her AIS status to Not Under Command at 00:19 UTC on 20 May. Huge Kumano also updated her AIS status to Not Under Command at 22:57 UTC on 19 May. Both vessels were later shown stopped or drifting in the Singapore Area, with the anchor handling vessel, Boka Sweeper, operating nearby. ▶️ Watch the playback of the vessels’ movements.

Two vessels reportedly seized by the IRGC are both operated by MSC While initial reports suggested they were part of a six-vessel MSC convoy, track analysis conducted by #MarineTraffic analysts indicates it is unlikely they were transiting together with the other four vessels, which exited the area successfully. Instead, the two vessels appear to have followed a different route and were trailing behind the rest. Epaminondas, a chartered 6,690 TEU vessel deployed on the INDUSA service connecting India and the US East Coast, with intermediate calls at Khalifa Port and Jebel Ali, and MSC Francesca (11,336 TEU), operating on the Himalaya Express service linking India, the Persian Gulf, and the Mediterranean, had both been stuck in the Persian Gulf since the start of the conflict.

Russian tanker diverts course amid US naval presence A sanctioned Russian oil tanker has made three failed attempts to reach Venezuela after a US Navy destroyer blocked its route. According to #MarineTraffic data, the Seahorse departed from the Port of Matanzas in Cuba on November 9 at 8:54 a.m. local time. While sailing toward Venezuela, the vessel made a U-turn on November 14 after altering its course to 160 degrees. According to media reports, the vessel was intercepted by the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Stockdale. The laden tanker made another U-turn on November 16, rejoining its initial route, before being intercepted again in the early hours of November 17, after which it made yet another attempt to continue its voyage. The vessel is currently sailing in the Caribbean at 10 knots with an unknown destination. Watch the playback of the tanker's movements:

The Strait of #Hormuz saw continued directional imbalance on 29 April, with all 12 verified crossings travelling west to east and no eastbound return traffic recorded, according to #Kpler data. Transit volumes rose slightly from the previous day, suggesting stable but gradually strengthening activity, though still below peaks earlier in the month. Higher risk participation remained limited, with two sanctioned vessels and one shadow ballast transit. Most movements involved general cargo, container ships and bulk carriers, with flows focused on dry commodities such as steel, cement and clinker, underscoring a shift away from tanker led trade. Ηere's the #MarineTraffic playback of the time based on the #AIS data received from the vessels.

Maritime security under scrutiny in Denmark Drone incursions prompt tightening of airspace and UAV rules as authorities investigate potential launch platforms at sea. Meanwhile, the crude oil tanker #Pushpa (IMO 9332810) emerges as a high-risk vessel. French authorities are investigating the tanker in connection with a suspected UAV-related offence involving Danish airspace. Sanctioned by both the UK (FCDO) and EU, Pushpa shows classic hallmarks of maritime evasion tactics: ◾Confirmed AIS spoofing: 5 Jul–30 Aug 2024 ◾False identity broadcasts as ‘BORACAY’ ◾Port-call risk and AIS gaps ◾Classification, P&I, and ISM Manager irregularities Dimitris Ampatzidis, Senior Risk & Compliance Analyst, commented: "Pushpa’s activity profile, including confirmed AIS spoofing, identity inconsistencies, and multiple port-call anomalies, matches patterns commonly associated with maritime evasion tactics. When considered alongside UK and EU sanctions and unclear class and P&I status, the vessel presents a credible compliance concern." The #MarineTraffic playback below shows the vessel's latest movements👇
