I think we got to see the consequences of the lack of full blast shielding. Boostback probably would have gone fine minus one engine had this single engine, either E5 or E6, not had an energetic event and took out 16 of its neighboring engines.

Messing around with the recent environmental assessment information published earlier today for ship contingency landing zones. If my extrapolation is near-correct it looks like the first orbital flight will go into a ~48.7º profile, only two orbits and it's down in just about three hours

1st deliberate heading change by Australis since they started trailing the floating Starship days and days ago. This puts them with the aft end of the vessel roughly in line with the nose of the ship (as it has been floating with a pretty consistent ~40 degree heading)

I see a lot of people sharing stories so I think I might as well. The first SpaceX launch I watched live was Jason 3 on January 17 2016. The fifth landing attempt and the first one following the first successful RTLS a month before. We didn't get this video until the day after launch. This was the point where I really got interested into spaceflight as a whole. I have highly mixed feelings about the state of the company just over ten years later as they have gone public today but it's been one hell of a ride, that's for sure.

I swear to god is this is rendered in Blender it's got the exact same default glare effect from the compositor and there's the specific jittering from the denoise algorithm that's like iconic to specifically blender renders

Just an FYI, because I'm seeing a lot of people discussing wanting the double sided patch. The only people who actually make them are AB Emblem (other providers are just reselling). With them all out of stock it's not known if they're making another production run, that was said to be decided by which one sold better. Any of the ones you see currently available are the front-sided only ones and/or backorder for this that may not actually exist I got mine way back in October.

I don't like the way that the first of the last three engines cuts off. It's a few seconds earlier than its sisters and its own shutdown timing is atypical. The other two certainly made full duration. The shutdown of that engine also appears visually faint compared to how it typically looks on the other engines. I've mirrored the engine graphic and rotated these two camera views so they all match as if you were looking from the same angle, just makes visualizing the plume directions a bit easier.

The ice forming here during the landing burn is also interesting to me. This structure is effectively like a raceway running around the base of the booster, for context. Links up each of the 40 junction boxes on the exterior that route commodities to and from each engine and such. There shouldn't be anything venting in the cavity there. We've never seen condensation, especially to the point of ice, form on these surfaces. Yes, it's affected by exterior moisture as you can see it fluctuate as it passes through a cloud here, but the difference is negligible and it only really starts forming as soon as the landing burn begins. If something broke in there...not saying it did but it's an interesting prospect

307 hours since landing, 735 kilometers traveled. Here are the tracks of the vessels, including the capture of Starship, since landing. Skimmer Tide made way to shore a day ago. Ranger, with the floating Starship, is alone in the Indian ocean right now, ~1300km from Australia. They have still not begun their return journey.
