Taking my own experience in 3x3 Basketball and the Olympic feel to Gaelic Football. 5x5 last night. 1. If you retrieve the ball in play (turnover) you just work it outside the zone before you can score 2. 3 points for a point out side the zone If you 3. Points and goals inside as normal What I observed, without any instruction; - man on man defending - lots of finding separation, loop runs, deep runs - lots of outside shots But while I was using this for repetitive shooting & defending practice, we should be looking at variations of the game at all ages. It is not going to detract from the main Championships. Variants of the sports are crucial for the development and longevity. The GAA are looking for things to put before all Irelands. Why couldn’t you have open competitions of 5x5 or 7’s or other variations that people who don’t want to fully commit to the very challenging modern pursuit of Senior Hurling/Football can do.

Thrilled to be Ireland’s first user of Proton Sports’ cutting-edge athletic assessment tool! Available now for individual/team evaluations, it identifies strengths, weaknesses, and injury risks while optimizing training loads. Trusted globally by top practitioners and clubs like Aston Villa FC and the Belgian FA, Proton streamlines performance analysis, reduces injury likelihood, and delivers instant reporting. I’ll use it to create tailored programs targeting athletes’ needs—sprint/endurance focus, accel/decel/COD drills, etc.—and provide teams with efficient, data-driven insights to peak at competition time. After waiting years for a tool that “checks all boxes of performance assessment” I’m excited by this burgeoning partnership, I’m offering a **special discount** to the first 3 teams and 5 individuals who book assessments. DM to learn more!

Really nice visual on what a week should cover from a strength, power & speed POV. Sprint every week, maybe twice. One massive issue in Gaelic Games now is too much weightlifting and bodybuilding. So you have lads walking around 5-8kg above the weight their top speed is and it also limits the amount of repeat runs they can make. This issue is about to explode into an even greater one. Mindless when play a sport (Gaelic Football) that next year could ask in some players 15-30% more running than last season!! We are heading for an injury epidemic like no other if teams don’t prepare properly going forward. Some of the stuff I’m hearing from Senior Club and Inter County teams around the country already is mind bending stupidity. One leading “manager” (in inverted commas ‘cos hardly deserves the title) has completely ignored the protests of the S&C Coach in the demands of training and running said manager wants to do. Supposedly the highest level of the game. Paid professional ignored. Don’t think this isn’t common. We have to get to the needed KM’s, sprints, High speed runs and all that. But if we do it overweight and too fast we are absolutely going to break down. It’s physics folks, and some of these geniuses don’t believe in it. Credit: Hansen Athletics
