Ways I like to work and experiment: For this search input component, I can strip away pretty much all of the surrounding UI and focus entirely on the component in isolation. From there, I can quickly jump between different states, bringing back parts of the UI or the full context to experiment with patterns, behaviors, and interactions.

I've been building layout engines and grid systems my entire career, and the latest leap in model capabilities finally feels like it has set me free. This prototype explores a thesis I wrote in 2019 on “structured randomization”: generating layouts within a strict set of rules, including a column grid, padding, safe space and an underlying pixel grid. The model can only play within those boundaries. The result is 180+ variations I can quickly scan, compare, and use to make more deliberate design decisions myself.

A German tweeting about grids … oh well here goes nothing: Every component here follows a very simple and layered grid structure. First 8px base grid. I set that up as tightly as possible to allow for max flexibility later. 24px radius + Inset 24px Second padding (safe space) and content areas showing how things are grouped together. Then the structure with text hierarchy, image placeholders and controls, followed by the actual font sizes and weights used in each component. I’m only using two font families (Inter and Baskerville) and a max of three font weights and sizes per component (very important for visual hierarchy) Those are the basics but those constraints will get you pretty far and LLM is good at maintaining those consistently as it builds out more components on the fly.
