LAWMA Operations Team has deployed bulk waste carriers, loaders, and support teams to clear identified illegal dump sites. From Alaba Rago, operations will extend to Okokomaiko and the median around Lagos State University (LASU), priority locations due to heavy pedestrian/vehicular activity and recurring indiscriminate dumping. Next, the clean-up will progress from Agric Bus Stop toward Mile 2, ensuring steady restoration of the entire corridor. This is not a one-off evacuation. It includes continuous monitoring, stakeholder engagement with traders and residents, sustained public sensitisation, and enforcement to prevent reoccurrence and keep the axis clean. ONGOING: Following the expiration of compliance notices, LAWMA’s Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team has commenced the sealing of non-compliant shops and plazas along the Tejuosho–Ojuelegba corridor. The enforcement action targets premises that failed to comply with waste management regulations and continued the indiscriminate disposal of waste on public roads. A clean Lagos requires compliance, not convenience. We will continue to enforce environmental laws to protect public health, keep our roads clean, and hold offenders accountable. 🚨 ONGOING: Environmental Compliance Enforcement at the Tejuosho–Ojuelegba Corridor Today, our LAWMA Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team, working alongside Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) officials, OP MESA military personnel and the Nigeria Police, is carrying out another round of enforcement operations along the Tejuosho–Ojuelegba corridor, with shops being sealed over the indiscriminate disposal of waste on the road median. 📍The operation currently covers Modele Street, Fagbile Street and Maja Street, where persistent environmental sanitation violations continue despite sustained advocacy, repeated warnings and previous engagements. These enforcement actions are necessary to restore environmental order, protect public infrastructure and ensure compliance with Lagos State environmental laws. 🔒 The affected shops will remain sealed until the required sanitation standards are met and full compliance with environmental regulations is achieved. Our objective remains compliance, not punishment. We urge all businesses and residents to patronise their assigned PSP operators, keep their surroundings clean and dispose of waste responsibly. In the early hours of Saturday, 18th May 2025, the Chairman of the Lekki Estate Residents Association (Lekki Phase 1 Residents Association (LERA) ) alerted us to an incident involving the illegal dumping of refuse along Durosimi-Etti Street in Lekki Phase 1. A white Ford van with Abuja registration plates GWA 136E was caught in the act of indiscriminately discharging waste. The vehicle was traced to DONALD restaurant, a nightlife establishment located on Road 14 within the estate. The suspects were apprehended on the scene by LERA’s Chief Security Officer and taken into custody at the LERA Secretariat. It was reported that the individuals attempted to bribe the security team with ₦100,000—an offer that was firmly declined. Following the report, the Managing Director of LAWMA deployed the Monitoring and Compliance team to the location. The team took custody of the suspects and immediately sealed the premises of DONALD restaurant for gross environmental violations, in breach of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017. This incident reflects a broader pattern of non-compliance among several commercial operators in Lekki Phase 1 who have failed to register with their assigned Private Sector Participant (PSP) operators. Many of these facilities have been implicated in repeated acts of illegal dumping, particularly during off-peak hours. LAWMA’s partnership with LERA continues to deliver tangible results in identifying and sanctioning environmental defaulters. The Authority commends the swift and principled response of the LERA Exco and their security team. The suspects will be prosecuted in accordance with the law. LAWMA remains resolute in its commitment to enforcing environmental regulations across Lagos and urges all residents and businesses to adhere strictly to proper waste management practices. At approximately 5:47 a.m. on Tuesday, 3 June 2025, LAWMA Waste Infractions Surveillance and Investigation Team apprehended Ms Amaka Onuchkwu while she was illegally off-loading refuse at the Akesan bus stop on LASU-Iba Road. This action violates Lagos State environmental regulations against indiscriminate dumping. Operatives secured geo-tagged photographs and video footage of the offence before escorting the suspect to the Oshodi Environmental Taskforce Office. Attempts to verify Ms Onuchkwu’s residential address proved unsuccessful. The case file, together with the digital evidence, has been transferred to LAWMA’s legal unit for prosecution under the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law.

Yesterday morning, the LAWMA Public Waste Operations Team discovered large heaps of discarded plantain stalks irresponsibly dumped on the median at Iyana Iba. Following swift monitoring and compliance investigations, the source of the waste was traced to Afolabi Ege Plantain Market this morning. In accordance with the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law (2017), the market was sealed indefinitely at dawn today, Thursday, 17th July 2025, to serve as a deterrent against such infractions. We urge all market stakeholders and residents to adopt responsible waste disposal practices. Every business, home, and individual has a role to play in keeping our environment clean and healthy. Subsequent investigations conducted at the suspect's residence revealed the absence of a waste storage facility and no evidence of registration with a designated Private Sector Participant (PSP). A few days ago, I visited the playground under the Osborne Loop by Sura Market. I was joined by TARI TAYLAUR, the Senior Special Assistant on Environment, Hon. Adebanji Atewogboye (Adebanji Adeoye Atewogboye), Senior Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development, Adetoun Popoola, General Manager of Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency - LASPARK, and team members from LAWMA and LASPARK. The Osborne/Sura Playground was developed into a park and football field years ago, but since then it has been invaded by miscreants, informal waste collectors and other elements who dump their waste indiscriminately on a daily basis, negatively impacting the aesthetics, health, safety, and recreational value of the location. We engaged with the stakeholders and delivered a final warning to the illegal occupants to move out or face the full wrath of the law. 🌍We use a combination of mechanized and manual techniques to clear waste from drainage channels as seen in this short video of the ongoing LAWMA Marine Waste Unit intervention at Osapa Canal, a joint exercise coordinated by TARI TAYLAUR (SSA-Environment), in partnership with Lekki Concession Company (Lekki Concession Co.): 1. Preparation and Safety First: Before diving in, our team gears up with protective clothing—gloves, boots, masks, and visors to ensure safety against pollutants. 2. Removing Large Debris: The first step is to clear out large waste materials like plastics, fabrics, tires, wooden planks, and other bulky items that block the water flow. For this we used Lekki Concession Co. Excavator. 3. Sediment and Sludge Removal: Using shovels and rakes, we carefully remove the sediment build-up and sludge from the bottom of the channel, restoring its depth and capacity. 4. Washing and Sanitizing: When available, we use high-pressure hoses to wash away leftover debris. In future, we plan to apply eco-friendly sanitizers to reduce the microbial load, making the environment safer and more sanitary for the community. 5. Waste Segregation and Recycling: Collected waste is then segregated. Recyclables (plastics and water hyacinth) are sent to processing facilities as raw materials for our burgeoning circular economy. 🚫 Steps to prevent future pollution: - Community Engagement: Regular advocacy campaigns to raise awareness about the negative impacts of waste dumping on our individual and collective health and wellbeing. - Strict Enforcement: We’re ramping up surveillance and penalties for illegal dumping through sustained enforcement activities of KAI/LAGESC, LAWMA Enforcement Units and Environmental Health Officers. - Infrastructure Improvement: provision of more trash bins to households and businesses, and improved collection by PSP Operators. - Reporting Mechanisms: Empowering residents to report violations through easy-to-use digital platforms: DM us on LAWMA, or call our toll free lines: 07080601020 or 080000LAWMA. Yesterday I joined my colleagues TARI TAYLAUR (SSA Environment), Toun Popoola (GM Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency - LASPARK), Toyin Atanda (SSA Establishment), Derin Phillips (SSA LSDPC) and Jubril A. Gawat (SSA New Media) for cleanup and environmental sensitization at the Sura Loop Playground. Our team included members from LASPARK, Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps, 150 of our best street sweepers, and teams from LAWMA Marine Waste Unit, Advocacy Unit, Monitoring & Compliance Unit, Special Enforcement Unit, Operations Unit, and several volunteers from around and outside the community. Besides cleaning, we also planted 50 trees. An additional 200 trees will be planted in days ahead. Following yesterday’s cleanup exercise, the playground will be upgraded by Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency - LASPARK and the front section will be landscaped. We will also introduce policing units drawn from among local youth to prevent reoccurrence. Please stay tuned for future cleanups at locations near you.
