#OTD in 1970, the Oregon Highway Division consulted with the U.S. Navy and decided the best way to dispose of a whale carcass was to blow it up with a 1/2 ton of dynamite. The explosion caused blubber to rain down on spectators for over a 1/4 of a mile. The TV segment is classic.

#OTD in 2002, Royal Marines accidentally invaded Spain during a landing exercise. The marines thought they had reached the British colony of Gibraltar until Spanish fisherman informed them that they were on the wrong side of the border. The marines then beat a hasty retreat.

#OTD in 1925, Johnny Carson was born. Carson served as a U.S. Navy officer during WWII. In 1974, he and former Marine pilot Ed McMahon demonstrated the U-Fly-It on THE TONIGHT SHOW. Users launched a toy F-4 Phantom II and then tried to land on a model of USS Enterprise. U-Fly-It had a massive spike in sales due to this appearance. #ThrowbackThursday

#OTD in 2012, the U.S. Coast Guard sank the "ghost ship" Ryou-Un Maru. The Japanese fishing vessel had drifted for over a year after being swept away by the 2011 tsunami that hit Japan. The Ryou-Un Maru had entered a busy shipping area 180 miles from Alaska when the USCG sank it.

#OTD in 1975, SVAF Maj. Buang-Ly stole a Cessna O-1 Bird Dog and landed on USS Midway with his wife and 5 children to escape North Vietnamese forces. The Midway's CO ordered $10 million worth of helicopters to be pushed overboard to clear the deck for Buang's landing.

It's #NationalPigDay! Dating back to the early 60s, a prank played by carriers in the Mediterranean was to surprise their relieving carrier by releasing greased pigs on the flight deck. This 1986 video is of a helicopter from USS America dropping off pigs on USS John F. Kennedy.

During the final cruise of the Audacious-class aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal in 1978, the crew held a mock funeral in which the wardroom piano was lauched from the bow catapult and buried at sea. The piano hit 104 knots as it went over the end of the flight deck. #FunFactFriday

#OTD in 2006, USS Oriskany (CV-34) was sunk off the coast of Florida to create an artificial reef. Navy engineers estimated that it would take 5 hours for the Oriskany to sink after the charges were detonated, but the carrier slipped beneath the waves after only 35 minutes.

This rare color film shows USS Enterprise in NY for #NavyDay in 1945. To outsmart the souvenir-seeking New Yorkers who had stripped USS Missouri, the crew put out a bucket of old nails with a sign stating they had been captured from the Japanese. Nails were gone within 5 minutes.

#OTD in 1980, the sci-fi film THE FINAL COUNTDOWN was released. USS Nimitz travels back in time to the eve of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Of all the types of aircraft featured in the film, only the E-2 Hawkeye is still in service. The Nimitz will be decommissioned next year.

To surprise John F. Kennedy on #InaugurationDay in 1961, PT-796 was repainted to appear as PT-109 and then hauled down Pennsylvania Ave. JFK's face lit up when he saw nine of the crewmen who were with him when the real PT-109 was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer in 1943.

#OTD in 1970, TORA! TORA! TORA! premiered. The spectacular scene with a P-40 crashing into other fighters was an accident caused when the stunt radio-controlled plane went out of control. The crew seen running for their lives were not acting. The director decided to use the shot.

#OTD in 1968, a Soviet TU-16 Badger crashed while buzzing USS Essex (CVS-9) in the Norwegian Sea. After making a low pass of the carrier at 50 feet above the water, the Badger's wingtip hit a wave that sent the bomber into a cartwheel. None of the aircrew survived.
