Horrid for Nathan Cleary - taken off on a medicab after suffering a traumatic ankle injury (opposite leg to his previous foot bone stress injury) Hip drop tackle mechanism - tacklers weight comes down on outside of lower leg trapping foot & turns it sideways. Report from sideline of a possible open/compound fracture (bone pierces the skin). If confirmed open wound greatly increases risk of infection, will need washout during surgery to reduce risk. Usual recovery range of ankle fracture/dislocations is 3-4 months but the open nature of the injury increases the uncertainty here & it might not be so clear cut. Plenty more to come here. Thoughts with Cleary - such a significant injury.

Nathan Cleary has been discharged from hospital after surgery to repair an open fracture in his left leg, with the surgeon reportedly happy with the outcome & hopeful that Cleary will fit for Round 1 2027 (via Scott Bailey) Cleary will go back for a 2nd surgery later this week on the stress fracture in his right foot that he carried into the Prelim Final - there will be a overlapping period of non-weight bearing for both surgeries so he may be required to use a wheelchair for a short time. The right foot injury has been revealed as a Jones fracture - which is a break in the 5th metatarsal (bone on the outer side of the foot) that would usually require around 10 weeks recovery. Even though Jones fractures are known for slow healing, tricky rehab and high re-fracture rates it will still have plenty of time to recover. Surgery (usually a screw fixation) helps lower that re-fracture risk, and with the open leg fracture needing months of rehab the foot will likely be ready long before the leg is.

Horrific luck for Luke Metcalf who won’t return after suffering a right hamstring injury. Rare goalkicking mechanism now seen twice in two weeks (after Ashton Ward in Round 23). Metcalf also has an extensive hamstring injury history - earlier this season a left hamstring injury cost him 6 weeks, and in 2023 right and left hamstring injuries both cost him 6+ weeks. A best case minor strain would usually be a 2-4 week return, but considering Metcalf’s history wouldn’t be surprised to see the Warriors be conservative with his return date.

Connor Watson only spent 1 minute on the field during the Prelim Final after leaving for a HIA. Initially deemed a Category 2 HIA (possible signs of concussion) this was then upgraded to a Category 1 HIA (obvious signs of concussion) via the independent doctor. Watson will enter the NRL’s concussion protocols which have a mandatory 11 day stand down period for Category 1 HIA’s. Now usually this would mean he would be unavailable the following week, which for the Roosters is obviously the Grand Final. But the Roosters indicated post match Watson was undergoing further concussion assessments & a decision on challenging the Category 1 designation (& the 11 day stand down) had not been made yet.

Traumatic contact mechanism with direct blow to the side of the face - will be off for scans but didn’t look good. If jaw fracture is confirmed often recovery range is 4-8 weeks - underrated challenge is the weight loss due to restrictions with chewing early on. Terrible way for Lofipo’s season to end after such an outstanding year from both her & the Titans. Thoughts with her

Madden indicates he copped a knee to the groin at training that resulted in a haematoma in his testicles, which is a pooling of blood that forms a raised lump. He was rushed in for surgery hours after the incident. Thankfully if treatment is performed within 2-3 days 90% make a full recovery with no long term implications (fertility etc)

Reece Walsh will go for scans on what the Broncos suspect is a syndesmosis injury. Mechanism about as textbook as it gets - weight of tackler drops down on Walsh’s ankle, turns foot out. Traumatic nature + high level of force brings concern for moderate to high grade syndesmosis injury - potential for surgery (6-8 weeks) is there & even if not with 3 games left would be lucky to feature again this season.

Both high speed mechanisms & noticeably limping - likely multi-week recoveries incoming & as we’ve seen with other similar cases recently could easily be 4-6 weeks. Never seen anything like it.

Ashton Ward won’t return & will go for scans after suffering a hamstring injury. Mechanism not a common one - don’t see a hamstring strain during goal kicking very often. Already tough to have a quick return from hamstring injuries, but significantly limited his function (had to be helped off) so worry for at least a partial tear & multi week recovery.

Nathan Cleary has a “stress-related bone issue in his foot” - what does that mean?!?? Effectively a stress response (bone bruise) or stress fracture - would often result weeks on the sidelines but finals time can mean things are different. This isn’t the Panthers first time facing this after Dylan Edwards played the entire 2021 finals series with a foot stress fracture! Can Cleary do the same?

The NRL have confirmed there will be no rule changes heading into the 2025 season. That means kickoffs will be staying the same - the proposed 7 tackle/20m line change from a report earlier today won’t come into effect. News that will be well received by Paleaaesina enthusiasts.

Great thread on Deine Mariner. Discussed on the pod last night - there’s nothing to the suggestions of mistreatment. The incidence rate of a thigh cork progressing to compartment syndrome is so low it isn’t even documented in literature - effectively it would be less than 0.1%. Mariner played through a cork, which happens week in & week out in all contact sports. It just had a super rare complication. Thankfully he had excellent care to identify & treat it as quickly as possible.

Gout Gout is out til next year after suffering a hamstring injury at training! 😮 😱 He gave a detailed update - good news he should be fine getting back to top speed, but it could take him 2-4 months to do so! As always with hamstring tears the main concern is re-injury risk 🤕

I’m all for cracking down on poor tackle tech & following framework when it comes to punishing high tackles, but “no mitigation” is laughable here. He was lower at a good tackle height but got swung around. Decisions like this will lose players and fans

Eli Katoa’s brain bleed that required surgery is as serious as it gets - a medical emergency that could have had catastrophic consequences. We look at: - 3 blows to the head - the main mechanisms of injury - a surgery that requires part of the skull to be removed to gain access to the brain - comparisons to Te Maire Martin (who took 3 years off footy) - recovery possibilities Again, thoughts are with Katoa as he recovers.

Taniela Tuiaki did not play again after this tackle resulted in tibia/fibula fractures + ligament damage. A past example of the significant injury risk hip drop tackles can carry - recent NFL research suggests a 20X higher injury rate during HDT.
