UGANDA | BRUSSELS: Her Excellency Mirjam Blaak Sow, Uganda’s ambassador in Brussels, renounced her Dutch citizenship in the 1980s to serve the regime of Gen. Museveni. During her tenure in Europe’s political capital, Museveni’s gov’t has continued to evade meaningful international accountability for grave abuses — from atrocities in Northern Uganda and cross-border violence in Eastern Congo, to the 2016 killings in Kasese and the 2020 massacre in Kampala, alongside ongoing repression and systemic human rights violations. Close proximity to institutions such as the Int'l Criminal Court and other international bodies must not translate into diplomatic cover for impunity. A decade ago, in a sit-down interview with renowned columnist Femi Akomolafe, Blaak Sow spoke candidly about her commitment to the regime. Today, the international community must ensure that diplomatic influence and elite networks do not shield those credibly accused of serious violations from scrutiny and justice. ELECTION VIOLENCE: Another video has emerged from the night of January 16, 2026, when Uganda’s military stormed the home of opposition leader Bobi Wine’s aide, Hon. Muwanga Kivumbi Muhammad, in Butambala. Civilians were gunned down as soldiers allegedly searched for polling agents and official declaration of results forms. At least seven innocent people were killed that night. To this day, there has been no credible investigation into this massacre under the leadership of the CDF Muhoozi Kainerugaba. Silence and impunity cannot be the answer when citizens demanding transparency are met with bullets. The families of those killed deserve justice, truth, and reparations. We reject unchecked election fraud and state violence in Uganda—tactics that Gen. Museveni has normalized at home and exported across the region. The international community must act. Swift Global Magnitsky sanctions against top military and government officials responsible for these abuses are urgently needed. Justice must also extend to the victims massacred in November 2020 and to every Ugandan whose life has been shattered by political violence. It is the only path toward credible democracy and lasting stability.
