The inventory's background shows the moment James kills Mary from the OG SH2 (see end of the video). At first it's slow and blurry because James is getting flashbacks but he's in denial, and it becomes clearer and faster after the Pyramid Heads fight, when he accepts the truth. A subtle hint Maria isn't real, she doesn't get soaked by the rain. You can see James gets soaked slowly, but not her. The reason he asks "Maria.. It turns blank when James arrives at Lakeview Hotel, it disappears from the envelope after watching the videotape, and the envelope also disappears after the Pyramid Heads fight, when James accepts the truth. It's just another desperate attempt to trick himself. There's a big hidden secret in this cutscene; The real reason Angela panics is because she notices someone spying on her and James. By hacking the camera we see that she notices them and talks to them, not to James, and by disabling music and ambience we can hear their footsteps and the rustle of clothes. While it's possible she saw her father, that person/monster stays there after she leaves, and spies on James while he digs up the director's box. James can get a nervous tic if he gets too stressed. It can only trigger after he enters Brookhaven, the hospital likely triggers a PTSD response and the stress remains afterwards. Interacting with a red square stops the tic. Perhaps what helps is the feeling of "someone groping around his skull" that he mentions in the opening..? As though something "resets" his nervous system. The official SH2 novel explains what James is thinking as he walks down the Forest Trail, and it gives us a glimpse on his deranged side, which he's very good at hiding; "...It was no wonder then, with these kinds of thoughts in his head, that James found himself wishing for a miracle. Did she really die three years ago? Or had she died and somehow been revived? Perhaps after the funeral and after the workers and mourners left the grave unattended, Mary woke up and began desperately beating the lid of her coffin? Seeing Mary bedridden always breaks my heart. In the "Leave" ending she behaves like she did before she got sick. This is because James chooses to remember her for who she was, and not what the disease made her, just like Mary says in her letter. The official SH2 novel describes how much her disease changed her. "Because of the medication and the radiation treatment, her shiny hair, her fresh skin, all traces of her past beauty had long gone. By that point, she even began to lose herself as well. The quiet woman who was once so discreet and kind, became bitter and angry. She would yell abusively, all her words turning into hateful curses that struck him like nails through his chest. It was more than James could bear. It was such a sorry sight, watching her heart turn ugly as she slowly withered away. The beautiful, gentle soul that he had fallen in love with had gone from the world." This behaviour is very common among chronically ill and bedridden people, who lose themselves and don't realize they're hurting their loved ones.
