.Charles Onyango-Obbo do you remember the phrase from the Clinton 92 campaign for the US Presidency that sunk George H. W? Why the architects & champions of this did not seek counsel of those who know is mind boggling. This embarrassment that the #SovereigntyBill has become could have been avoided well in advance🤷🏿♂️

Kabushenga’s Thoughts A Life of Exercise Folks, this is for those of you whose parents are my generation or older. This morning along with my guys from the The Mutungo Madbus I did the 25km segment of the Kyambogo Ultra Run. After that I went to my spin class, for another challenge where we are doing 26 classes for the month of May. My guys in both communities keep asking why I am doing this to myself. They think I am overdoing it & punishing myself. The answer is simple. A life of exercise like the one I live, is a hack against chronic illness. It significantly reduces chances of this happening by a wide margin. If it occurs, a person in good physical shape has a better fighting chance of curing or at least obviating the worst effects. So what is my point? It is cheaper to do this than pay for medical treatment for chronic illness. So rather than dealing with the burden of fundraising for this & pain of nursing parents that are ill. If in fact you get your parents to switch to a life of exercise and change thier relationship with food, you will avoid this. I am not suggesting a crazy regime like mine. No. Just a daily walk, a cycling class, a nutrition approach that improves one’s metabolic health, good sleep, good content(reading books) & good company, will save you from stress of what I described earlier. The medical option should be complete last resort and you can do this. Share what I have posted with your folks. Have a lovely weekend

Our neighbors are doing all the right things to make their coffee work for their country & benefit their farmers. Here we are using coffee as an excuse to take money out of the national treasury for personal gain. A false promise that is simply a scam. We must take matters into our hands. No one is coming to save us

Folks, it is election season in Uganda & campaigning is in full flight. My civic duty this time is to bring you the #NewBreed of Ugandan leaders. You will meet the young politicians that are vying for public office. The ones that will shape what Uganda will be in the next 20 years. Where, why & how do they plan to take our beloved Uganda? Do they have what it takes to take us there? We will find out every Monday at 8 pm starting November 3rd, here on my X Spaces. I also have another duty to discharge. To pass on the baton of curating public debate. After 25 years, it is time to hand over. And so I will be doing this with a #NewBreed moderator, Fiona Kemi who I trust has the temperament to do this. Together we will get you to appreciate the #NewBreed, The Next Generation of Leaders, unfiltered

This Week in Ugandan Coffee Day Four & Five It took me coming to Geneva to learn a business model that has been hiding in plain sight back home in Uganda. I call this The Alchemist Effect. After the book by Brazilian writer, Paulo Coelho. The point he makes in the book is that we travel long distances in search of answers that are within us. This I learnt from listening to my colleagues James Muhangi and Pison Kukundakwe who manage huge and hugely successful coffee cooperatives in south western Uganda. It turns out that Rubanga Coffee Rubanga Co-operative Society Ltd and Ankole Coffee have the business model that delivers value to the boards majority of the coffee sector players-the farmer and leaves something for the trader as well. There is one thing I need to make abundantly clear. The Ugandan farmer who is the producer and owner of the coffee has only one opportunity to extract the most value-at the farm gate. This is it. At this point the farmer receives the financial value of their produce. If they are to command higher value that is further downstream means they have to invest in aggregation, processing, packaging, marketing and distribution. This requires immense upfront financial outlays long before the value can be recouped. What this means is that the only factors a farmer can control are the on his farm. It is here that they can determine the kind of product and quantity they can bring to market. This therefore means that the farmer has to understand the market for which they should produce. Enter the James/Pison lightbulb moment from yesterday and the training about specialty coffee at International Trade Centre (ITC). When you are at the farm and dealing with local traders, they are at once the buyer and the market. But they don’t need to be. It turns out that the two cooperatives have gone out of their way to craft a production process and do their own local aggregation with a view to selling in the lucrative specialty market. Listening to them and to our facilitator about this unique market I reached a conclusion about what producers like me in Uganda need to do in order to get more value for their effort. We need to decide which market we are producing for. To do so, we must know exactly what they want. So if you are looking at the speciality market, quality and unique ways of crafting the profile of the beans is central. If however you choose the commercial volumes route, then you put your money where you are going to get more quantity out of the trees. These deliberate choices puts the coffee farmer in a stronger bargaining position. It is what we should focus on. The support we would need is agronomy, working capital and market access initiatives. This is where higher authorities should invest public funds and time if the coffee is to benefit the many and the country. The rest is distractive noise
