Kabushenga’s Thoughts Here Is A Cause For You I disappointed my friend Jacqueline Asiimwe. You see, Jackie has this great concept which really works well & especially for her. She does this walk where she calls up a person she would like to have a conversation with & off they go. For a start, it is good exercise. Walking always is. Secondly, it is a really really cheap date. Almost laughably so. You who comes along never has to cost her anything. The road is free and no need to eat or drink. Yet you keep her perhaps the most productive company of any date that anyone can wish for. When you are done you go home. But I digress. This is not about hooking up. It is about conversation & learning. So back to the disappointment. Jackie expected to talk about the change that my life has gone through since my previous work. Deep down, without saying it, she expected I would break out into a run rather than walk. None of that happened. In fact I stuck to walking. Only at a faster pace. She had to slow me down to catch her breath. But I couldn’t help myself. Rather than miss out on running, I spent most of our walking time on the road, talking about running. I said nothing about the new direction my life had taken. She didn’t forgive me. But my run talk was about an issue dear to Jackie’s heart. I decided to tell her why on Sunday October 4th we are going to run to #SaveAMother. The week before I visited Mengo Hospital Blood Bank. It was a sobering experience. The Independence Marathon is partly a fundraising drive to benefit them because they serve the underprivileged particularly mothers in child birth. Of the 187 Ugandan mothers that die every year during child birth, most of them bleed to death. Uganda suffers an annual blood shortfall of 100,000 units. So Mengo Hospital Blood Bank a major source, is in desperate need of blood and money to collect it. They also need a cold room to handle the raw blood. Right now it is kept in a few ordinary fridges. And let me add that the shortage of O-Minus blood is particularly acute. This was my conversation with Jackie. By the time she remembered why she had wanted us to go on this walk together, we were done. I laughed at her! And she was sold in signing up for the cause. Folks, this Saturday September 5th, the Ministry of Health- Uganda will launch a month long campaign to focus on mothers who die from bleeding during childbirth. Go over to Kololo Independence Grounds & donate blood. Better still you can sign up for the Independence Marathon set for Sunday October 4th. We will run to #SaveAMother. For now, please watch these clips to understand how dire this situation is. A special thanks to Mrs. Charlotte Kainerugaba, the PPH National Champion for taking up this cause. But just so you know, 187 out of every 1,000 mothers die during childbirth. The main cause is excessive bleeding & shortage of blood. Please share this message and let us all get involved. Kabushenga’s Thoughts Another Coffee Milestone It is now the story of my life’s current season. And we have another reason to celebrate our RugyeyoFarmLtd Coffee. But first, gratitude to you all. Last week I put out a straw poll on my socials to gauge preference for the designs of our coffee packaging. The response has been as engaged as it has been dynamic, even passionate. You didn’t just choose, you justified your preference. Aspects of the branding rationale I had not even thought about. It was rewarding to read your responses but most importantly it was humbling to see how invested you are in our Rugyeyo Coffee journey. You want us to succeed. You want to see it work. We will make it work. This engagement created clarity. Now we will make adjustments to the designs and prepare for the market. This conversation convinced us about the direction we are going to take in 2027. Our coffee will be available for sale to final consumers on a commercial scale. The plan is to craft 5 tons of our October harvest into a fine robusta for processing & packaging. And then sell it as ready to drink coffee. We should go to market with the first batch in January 2027. It will be a medium roast that can do mainly espresso but also long blacks. A chance for Ugandans to enjoy an organic home brew. There is another reason we are confident about the quality of our product and why we are barnstorming in this direction. After taking our coffee to the London & Manchester Coffee Festivals in 2025, we were invited to submit samples to the UK’s Guild of Fine Foods for scoring and rating. The evaluation focuses strictly on taste through rigorous blind tastings by a panel of over 500 culinary experts, including chefs, food critics, buyers, and writers. Products are stripped of all branding and packaging to ensure complete impartiality. Instead of numerical points, products receive a score ranging from zero to three stars. Roughly only 35% to 40% of all annual entries receive any stars at all, making it a definitive stamp of quality Rugyeyo Farm Coffee scored a star. I wish I had sent our very best beans. The sample I sent was all I had at the time, not necessarily the best. But now I know that our product is premium and properly crafted will deliver a world class coffee experience. We are ready to go. In five to ten years we will have a reason to celebrate our coffee family tradition that started in 1954.
