We know many people want to help our hummingbirds after Hurricane Melissa. If you’re putting out feeders, please don’t use brown sugar, raw sugar or coloured syrups as they can harm the birds. Use 1 part granulated white sugar to 4 parts water. In our tropical climate the mixture spoils quickly. If it becomes cloudy or milky after 2–3 days, wash the feeder and add fresh solution. I’ve seen this video making the rounds with our endemic Jamaican boa. I’m not sure when the footage was taken, but I want to remind everyone that our Jamaican boa is not poisonous. If you ever come across one, you can gently use a stick to guide it away—there’s no need to hurt or chop our very special snakes. We only have a few left in Jamaica, so let’s protect them. A giant centipede hid in a follower’s underwear after using the restroom and bit her in a very sensitive area. Protected species are being trapped openly, proudly, and without any fear or respect for the law. Look how these birds are crammed into this cage. If this doesn’t make you angry, I don’t know what will. Please report these activities to NEPA and the JCF immediately. I am calling on the Government to properly support these agencies with the staffing and resources they need to tackle these problems that existed long before the hurricane and continue now.
