We know many people want to help our hummingbirds after Hurricane Melissa. If you’re putting out feeders, please don’t use brown sugar, raw sugar or coloured syrups as they can harm the birds. Use 1 part granulated white sugar to 4 parts water. In our tropical climate the mixture spoils quickly. If it becomes cloudy or milky after 2–3 days, wash the feeder and add fresh solution. I can’t believe this is the Cockpit Country, one of the largest forested areas in Jamaica. This region is so rich in biodiversity that scientists are still discovering plants and animals new to science. We haven’t even fully assessed the area yet. I really wonder how our plants and animals are doing up there, especially after everything we’ve been seeing across the island. The mongoose was introduced to Jamaica in 1872 to control rats in sugar cane fields but it quickly became one of the worst invasive species on the island. It preys on our native lizards, snakes, frogs, birds, and their eggs, pushing some species to extinction and others to the brink. To conservationists, the mongoose is a major threat that must be managed, especially around sensitive nesting areas. To some people it is a pet. We need to have conversation about it. I’ve seen this video making the rounds with our endemic Jamaican boa. I’m not sure when the footage was taken, but I want to remind everyone that our Jamaican boa is not poisonous. If you ever come across one, you can gently use a stick to guide it away—there’s no need to hurt or chop our very special snakes. We only have a few left in Jamaica, so let’s protect them. Please be careful when entering dark, moist areas. Hurricane Melissa has displaced a lot of wildlife across Jamaica, including large centipedes. A giant centipede hid in a follower’s underwear after using the restroom and bit her in a very sensitive area. These bites can be extremely painful and may trigger allergic reactions that require medical attention. Stay alert. Shake out clothes. Protect yourselves. #RoostersWorldJA #SafetyAlert #HurricaneMelissa #WildlifeDisplacement

Thanks to Claudia for sharing this cool video. A lizard was caught by her cat, and while she was about to dispose of it, a giant centipede suddenly emerged from nowhere and grabbed the lizard. It’s a powerful reminder that there are many predators hiding in the dark, quietly waiting for an opportunity. Nature is always active, even when we don’t see it.
