They approved her for the cards at high interest rates even though Social Security is her only income. I haven’t even tried reaching out to the credit card companies.” Dave Ramsey: “I wouldn’t worry about that. She doesn’t have any money to give them anyway.” “I would explain to her that if she ever borrows money again, knowing she has no ability to repay it, that would be stealing. She has to stop borrowing not just for financial reasons, but on a moral basis.” “If someone dies with no assets, their debts generally go unpaid they aren’t passed on to family members. If there are assets, they’re used to pay debts before any inheritance is distributed. Since she owns nothing and her only income is Social Security, there’s nothing for creditors to collect, and Social Security benefits generally can’t be garnished.
