STATE RECORD TIED Blue Valley’s Maria Portela, a junior, tied the fastest 100m time ever run by a Kansas high school girl at the EKL Championships with an 11.377, officially rounding to 11.38. Portela now shares that top mark with Aria Pearce, who ran 11.38 unattached as a freshman two years ago. Pearce, originally from Sharon Springs and later Rock Creek, now competes in California as a junior. That 11.38 still remains Pearce’s career best. Both performances were wind aided. Still, Portela’s run was one of the greatest sprint performances Kansas has ever seen. She also owns a 23.75 in the 200m this season, currently the 3rd fastest mark in Kansas history, while helping lead Blue Valley to its first EKL girls team championship since 1997. Portela is already among the best sprinters Kansas has ever produced and there’s a real chance she could go down as the greatest in state history. #sportsinkansas

Carter Hajek of Nemaha Central finished one of the most storied careers in Kansas high school football history as a three-time Sports in Kansas 2A Player of the Year. Hajek closed his career with 7,902 rushing yards, 132 total touchdowns, 3,014 passing yards and 37 passing touchdowns while becoming Kansas’ all-time career touchdown leader. He also helped lead the Thunder to three state championships and one state runner-up finish. Hajek will continue his football career at Emporia State this fall. We caught up with him after his East Shrine Bowl squad earned a 14-7 victory on Saturday night in Emporia. #sportsinkansas

Cooper Reves of Salina Central was named the West MVP after rushing for more than 90 yards in Saturday’s defensive battle at the 2026 Kansas Shrine Bowl in Emporia. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound running back capped off a remarkable high school career after earning 2026 Sports in Kansas Class 5A Offensive Player of the Year honors and being selected to the Sports in Kansas Top 11 while leading the Mustangs to their first state football title in 20 years. A multi-time 5A state wrestling champion, Reves will continue his wrestling career at NCAA Division I Northern Iowa this coming season. #sportsinkansas

McPherson takes down undefeated #1 seed Ottawa in double OT 52-50 to advance to the 4A State Championship tomorrow as Pyle had a game high 16 points. Incredible weekend so far for the senior as he had 23 points and a buzzer beater on Wednesday to take down Baldwin. Three straight 5A state baseball championships for St. Thomas Aquinas under head coach Rick Sabath. The Saints continued their dynasty Saturday with a 4-0 victory over Shawnee Heights behind another dominant pitching performance and timely hitting at Eck Stadium. Saint Thomas Aquinas used a combined shutout from Lincoln Boyle and James Forgy to secure the title. Boyle was outstanding in the start, allowing just one hit over four scoreless innings while striking out seven. Forgy closed the door with three shutout innings in relief as the Saints captured their third consecutive state championship. Aquinas struck first in the second inning when Tommy Costello delivered an RBI single. The Saints added insurance throughout the game while their pitching staff never allowed Shawnee Heights to gain momentum offensively. The bottom of the Aquinas lineup proved critical. Costello, Jett Wood and Luke Bernhardt combined for four hits, two runs and two RBIs. Wood finished with two hits, while Costello drove in two runs. Cambren Floberg battled on the mound for Shawnee Heights, allowing three runs over five innings with four strikeouts. Cayden Lindsay and Jackson Hayes each recorded hits for the Thunderbirds. Under longtime head coach Rick Sabath, Aquinas continues to cement itself as one of the premier baseball programs in Kansas, now winning three consecutive 5A state championships.

Andale adds to its dynasty with another commanding 3A title win over Hayden, winning six of the last seven under head coach Dylan Schmidt and securing back-to-back 3A crowns. This senior class leaves with just two losses in four years and caps its run with a flawless 13–0 season. Schmidt now sits at an astounding 110–4 as Andale’s head coach. Mackenzie Weller of SIK caught up with Coach Schmidt, standout QB Sam Harp, who delivered three rushing touchdowns, multiple two-point conversions, and added an interception on defense, along with seniors Jack Horsch and Lane Parthemer after the win. #sportsinkansas

Olathe Northwest (6A🏈9-3) gets a big win over defending champions Gardner Edgerton tonight to advance to the 6A state championship. Brody Comfort and Bryce Randall with standout games tonight on offense with multiple TDs each. The Ravens defense also stepped up huge tonight against a good offensive. HC Lorne Clark and the Ravens are fired up and ready to get back to work next week where they will play Manhattan in the 6A state championship.
