I saw You Can See Everything again yesterday so I could try to deconstruct the magic tricks and talk to Kale Zelden about it on our MTSPodcast recording today. I really think Elizabeth Holmes thinks she's telling the truth. But something doesn't add up. There's this line in a New York Times article about her that she disputes saying: “They’re not playing me, they’re playing a character I created.” This was in reference to The Dropout, the Hulu series in which Amanda Seyfried plays Elizabeth Holmes. But Holmes DID seem to have created a character. The version of her we see in interviews during her tenure at Theranos is not the version of her we see in the YCSE. CEO Holmes is in costume (black turtlenecks in homage to Steve Jobs, high contrast makeup) AND in character. Her natural voice has a fairly deep register, but she dropped it even more in those days. Her cadence was direct and aggressive, her syllables clipped. In hindsight, it was clearly not her real speaking voice. Whether she adopted this intentionally or subconsciously, I don't know. So I made a video to compare. Watch these old interview clips side by side with these clips from nathan fielder's trailer. In YCSE, she's very feminine, softspoken, and her voice remains in a register that feels authentic. Her CEO voice was distinctly masculine, even bro-coded. The woman who convincingly swears she's never deceived anyone was on camera multiple times projecting a persona that was clearly not who she really is. It's very, very odd.
