Unbelievable. If the Speaker signed off on Chloe Swarbrick using the debating chamber to film a political attack ad for the Green Party, it would represent a serious lapse in judgment, allowing all manner of partisan campaign ads to be filmed inside the House. If Brownlee did not approve it, then Swarbrick, as a long-serving MP and party co-leader - would have been fully aware of the Standing Orders and filming protocols. She would have known that the Speaker’s explicit permission is required for such a shoot. That would make it a deliberate breach of the rules.

This creates clear air, completely undercuts TOP’s “kingmaker” ability, and gives him time to shape the narrative. Train wreck interview for Qiulae Wong and the Opportunities Party as they declare war on pensioners — punishing lifetime savers and those who are “asset-rich, cash-poor”. Wong effectively tells them: Downsize the family home you’ve scrimped and sacrificed for your whole life (essentially forced displacement), or defer the tax and rob your children’s inheritance by hundreds of thousands of dollars. Wong then doubles down, arguing that those whose properties have risen by a million dollars or more should be taxed on those gains — seemingly blind to the fact these are mostly unrealised paper gains that have already driven up their rates. In reality, this policy could pressure thousands, if not tens of thousands of pensioners into selling their family home. Every dollar paid in Land Value Tax (or deferred) is money taken from healthcare, daily living costs, or gifts to the grandkids. The Opportunities Party is sacrificing pensioners for their housing redistribution experiment.

This is utterly inexcusable. Yesterday, HDPA revealed that Chloe Swarbrick wrote directly to the European Union’s Trade Commissioner, complaining that New Zealand is not cutting emissions sufficiently and asking him to launch a formal investigation into whether we have breached the Free Trade Agreement. Her actions risked exposing our economy and exporters to the very real threat of sanctions — or even worse. That Swarbrick and the Greens attended the National Agricultural Fieldays in Hamilton without disclosing any of this to farmers or the media, even though she held a stand-up directly mentioning Free Trade Agreements and export markets and called on the govt to be honest and transparent — is nothing short of disgraceful and deeply hypocritical. It simply beggars belief that the media aren’t all over this.

Judge for yourself. Two interviews from Stuff/Three news presenter Samantha Hayes — one with ACT candidate Paul Henry, the other with Opportunities Party Leader Qiulae Wong. One faced aggressive personal questions and snide asides delivered under the breath (“trying to buy people’s favour perhaps”). The other was served up soft, leading questions that neatly aligned with party talking points. Don’t get me wrong, tough questions and robust policy scrutiny are essential. But they must be applied consistently. When viewed side by side, these two interviews cannot honestly be described as balanced or even-handed.

Serious questions need to be asked about the Green Party’s standards after selecting Michel Mulipola as their candidate for Māngere. His social media is full of vile abuse: calling police “cunts” and “pigs” while laughing at them, labelling a minister “a piece of shit,” and sharing grotesque cartoons that depict one minister with faeces streaming from his eyes and an anus for a mouth, while another is shown as a baboon with the minister’s face on its rear. He has incited outrage against a Samoan woman simply for volunteering with the IDF, celebrated Charlie Kirk’s assassination, issued threats, promoted his own “Death, death to the IDF” t-shirts, edited a video purporting to show Israel shooting a small child, and casually referred to Hamas as “armed resistance” and “a misnomer” — ignoring its designation as a terrorist organisation, its structured military wing, and its tactics and ideology. He has even labelled democracy itself a “red flag” and dismissed peace in Gaza and a two-state solution as a “cop-out.” The list goes on and on. It simply beggars belief that the Greens consider this kind of violent, toxic behaviour suitable for a potential Member of Parliament. How can a party that claims to stand for compassion, justice, and democracy possibly endorse someone who so brazenly glorifies violence, dehumanises opponents, and rejects the very democratic values he would swear to uphold? This is not political passion; it is poison.

How on earth did these ads get cleared by the Electoral Commission (EC) for being neutral? It seems no one there understands imagery bias and the concept of visual hierarchy. State broadcaster TVNZ and the EC are running highly targeted ads for Māori voters with the 'choose Māori or general roll' option. However, look at the framing. Empowering māori language such as “Breathe mana into your choice” and visuals that very clearly tie the Māori roll to core aspects of Māori identity, culture, connection to place, and a sense of empowerment. The ad subtly steers viewers, especially those of Māori descent - toward feeling that opting for the Māori roll is the natural, deeply meaningful choice. It frames it as a "mana-filled" expression of who they are, something authentic and right for their whānau and future. It’s soft guidance that lands emotionally without being overt. The opening scene - wharf - water = traditional land +sea connection. The marae kitchen scene - which has huge traditional pull with the voice overlay of “it’s not about right or wrong but what’s right for you” while the woman nods . The last scene is blatant - the voice overlay “shape the horizon ahead” with father and son fishing - fishing - passing on knowledge, legacy, cultural identity. What imagery does the general roll have to reinforce that option? None. There are zero equivalent scenes showing the general roll positively. There is no abstract or equal representations of both options, generic NZ or imagery like ballot boxes or diverse crowds etc. You simply cannot claim that these ads are neutral - the voice over yes, but the complete ad is not even close to neutral. TVNZ is using taxpayer money to promote ethnic electoral segregation while claiming 'neutral information’. At its core, it is motivational messaging that predictably boosts one roll. It beggars belief that hasn’t been flagged.

This is an absolute shocker from Opportunity Party leader Quilae Wong — and it reveals just how out of depth she and TOP really are. Wong is already on record saying retirees should just downsize and many have made good profits on the family home anyway when addressing the potential issue of tens of thousands of pensioners effectively being forced out of their family home due to the party’s Land Value Tax (LVT). It turns out Wong is just as lackadaisical about the impact TOP’s LVT will have on businesses that own land. In her NBR interview, when asked about the impact Wong casually says: “That, that will be part of it. Yeah. Yeah, and they will sort of have to adjust their cash flows accordingly." Stunningly detached. Wong seems completely oblivious to the fact that land isn’t a speculative side hustle for most companies — it’s a core operational cost for retail, manufacturing, warehousing, industrial, and thousands of other SMEs. There are around 70,000 commercial property operators alone, so TOP’s 1.75% annual LVT would deliver a serious cash burden, squeeze margins, and ultimately raise prices for consumers. This is about as far as you can get from being pro or even business friendly and further proof that TOP are indeed a left wing party masquerading as centrist. Media with no vested interest should be all over this.

And there you go. Te Pāti Māori and the Greens are effectively doing a deal. Less than 10 hours after I called on the Greens and Te Pāti Māori to stop playing games and be upfront with their supporters and the public, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer has essentially confirmed the deal. Ngarewa-Packer says Te Pāti Māori will “swallow their ego for the good of the nation.” She’s made it crystal clear that her party is focused on securing the candidate votes in their electorates and in doing so, has all but confirmed an arrangement with the Greens. According to the RNZ-Reid Research poll, 49.6% of all voters believe Labour should rule out any deal with Te Pāti Māori. Even worse for Labour: 38% of their own voters want Labour to reject Te Pāti Māori outright. A Greens-Te Pāti Māori deal increases the chances of a chaotic Labour-led coalition and makes Hipkins continual refusal to confirm if Labour will or won’t work with Te Pāti Māori almost inconsequential.

When asked about the India FTA and NZ First/Winston Peters he made his point clearly and concisely without getting lost in the weeds and bringing the tone down. Exactly what you’d expect from a strong coalition partner. The same applied to the proposed social media ban for under-16s, along with Chris Bishop’s Roads of National Significance announcement, emphasising the pushback and scrutinising of costings - something that bizarrely doesn’t seem to have been applied before.
