This is what happened today in presence of police in #Kolkata. A group of people with police permission protested outside Anandabazar Patrika - one of #India’s oldest newspapers and #Bengal’s most widely circulated - and painted a portion of its walls saffron. Why? Because a few days ago, after the #JadavpurUniversity fiasco, Anandabazar Patrika described the vandalism and violence allegedly involving ABVP and right-wing outsiders as “Saffron Gundami.” The newspaper can be criticised. Its journalism can be questioned. Its editorial choices can be challenged. But how dare anyone think that painting the walls of a newspaper is an acceptable way of answering criticism? And this is precisely why press freedom is not merely about what is written in newspapers. It is also about whether those in power and their supporters can tolerate a media organisation that does not speak in their colour. Power has never been particularly comfortable with a powerful media. It prefers a colourful media - one painted in the colour it likes. Trust me you haven't made the colour fly. You have only left a blot on democracy. Strongly condemn!

All the artists here in this village are Muslims and 99% of them have passports. Since they do shows abroad. And…90% of them have been deleted - mostly women. “Abdul ab humari zimmedari hai…” Cockroach Janta Party - CJP leader Ashutosh Ranka assured the inconsolable 80 year old mother who lost her son - Abdul’s father. Abdul had taken part in Jantar Mantar protest. He had recently visited the local school in a Bankura #Bengal and recorded a video. The same night he & his father were brutally assaulted.
