Aircraft Wheel Replacement Aircraft tires are inflated with dry nitrogen instead of compressed air. Being dry and chemically inert, nitrogen helps maintain more stable tire pressure and reduces the risk of fire if the brakes overheat. Every wheel assembly is designed to withstand repeated takeoffs, landings, heavy braking, and high mechanical loads. After replacement, the tire, wheel, and brake assembly are inspected before the aircraft returns to service. 📹 takeoffbrasil_

This experimental morphing wing, developed by researchers at the National University of Singapore, uses Macro Fiber Composite (MFC) piezoelectric actuators integrated beneath its composite skin. The actuators modify the wing's camber, allowing the airfoil to adopt different aerodynamic profiles without conventional hinged flaps. Instead of deflecting a discrete control surface, the wing itself changes shape while maintaining a continuous aerodynamic surface. The research combines smart materials, composite structures, and aeroelastic design to investigate adaptive wing technologies for future aircraft. Source: temaseklabaratories on YT

The Ka-27 uses a complex coaxial rotor system to eliminate the need for a tail rotor. It has two three-bladed rotors mounted on the same axis. They rotate in opposite directions, so their torque reactions largely cancel. But both rotors still need collective and cyclic pitch control. That requires concentric drive shafts, swashplates, pitch links and other control mechanisms to fit into one compact rotor head. The animation shows how much hardware is needed to control two rotors from the same axis. The result is a compact helicopter without a tail rotor, but with a much more complex rotor head and transmission.

Highly Automated Manufacturing of Carbon Fiber Aircraft Structures Large carbon fiber aircraft structures are manufactured using an automated robotic production line that integrates CFRP layup, compaction, quality inspection, stringer installation, and vacuum bagging. The process is digitally monitored and controlled through a Manufacturing Execution System (MES). Demonstrated by the DLR.

Automatic Helicopter Landings on Naval Ships Landing a helicopter on a moving naval ship is one of the most demanding tasks in aviation. The flight deck continuously changes its position, attitude, and velocity with the sea, requiring precise relative positioning throughout the approach. The landing sequence uses two navigation systems. During the approach, Differential GPS (DGPS) guides the helicopter along a calculated flight path. Near the flight deck, navigation switches to a laser guidance system, providing centimeter-level relative positioning for the final hover and touchdown. During the automatic hover, the flight control system continuously compensates for ship motion, wind, and turbulence to maintain a stable landing position. This significantly reduces pilot workload and can safely complete the landing even if the pilot becomes incapacitated. The system entered operational service on the JMSDF SH-60K Seahawk, becoming the world's first operational system capable of fully automatic landings of a manned helicopter on a moving naval ship. It was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

Airbus A350 Composite Wing Skin Manufacturing This video shows Automated Fiber Placement (AFP), where robotic systems precisely lay carbon fiber prepreg tapes onto a wing skin mold. The laminate is then cured under heat and pressure in an autoclave before advancing to subsequent manufacturing and wing assembly stages. 📹 airbus

Direct-Drive Aircraft Propulsion In most piston-powered aircraft, the propeller is bolted directly to the engine's crankshaft. Engine power is transmitted without gears, belts, or chains, allowing the throttle to control both engine and propeller RPM simultaneously. This direct-drive configuration simplifies the powertrain while reducing weight and maintenance. 🎥 prath1001

Building Aircraft Structures Instead of Assembling Them This video shows Automated Fibre Placement (AFP) manufacturing the lower half of a thermoplastic composite aircraft fuselage. Traditional aircraft fuselages are built by assembling hundreds of individual parts with thousands of mechanical fasteners. Composite manufacturing is gradually changing that approach by producing larger integrated structures with fewer joints. Thermoplastic composites can be reheated and welded after manufacturing, allowing large fuselage sections to be joined without relying entirely on rivets or adhesive bonding. The objective is not simply to replace aluminium. It is to reduce assembly time, simplify manufacturing, and support higher production rates while maintaining structural performance. The demonstrator shown here measures approximately 8 metres long and was built to evaluate automated manufacturing, welding, inspection, and assembly of large thermoplastic composite aircraft structures. The demonstrator was developed under the Airbus-led Multifunctional Fuselage Demonstrator (MFFD) programme by a European aerospace consortium.

NASA X-59 Assembly The X-59's distinctive shape is driven by aerodynamics rather than aesthetics. Its elongated nose and carefully contoured fuselage are engineered to manage shock wave interactions, reducing the sonic boom into a quieter sonic thump. 🎥 lockheedmartin
