Italian students issue video apology, say those involved to return home early Representatives of the Italian student group involved in the viral BTS train incident have issued a video apology after the controversy sparked widespread backlash in Thailand, including online harassment, confrontations at the group's hotel and an apology from the Italian Embassy in Bangkok. The students drew criticism after a video showed members of the group behaving loudly on a BTS train before allegedly mocking a Thai passenger who asked them to lower their voices. The incident prompted Thai netizens to flood the Italian Embassy's social media accounts with complaints, identify some of the students' personal social media profiles and confront the group at its Bangkok hotel. At least one Italian teacher was also wrongly identified online and subjected to harassment. The video, released by the Italian Embassy on Saturday, featured four representatives apologizing to the Thai people and expressing regret for offending Thai culture. They said the group had delayed responding because of fear, but acknowledged that waiting to address the incident had been a mistake. They also admitted their behaviour on the BTS was inappropriate and apologized to those affected. The representatives said the group does not condone the behaviour shown in the viral video and confirmed that the students directly involved would return to Italy as soon as possible. Deputy interior minister says 'This is Thailand' after alleged 'Israeli territory' remark at Phuket Chabad House Deputy Interior Minister Phonphir Suwannachawi said he responded "This is Thailand" after a Jewish man at the Patong Chabad House allegedly told officials the premises were "Israeli territory" during an inspection on July 22. The Chabad House, operated by Rabbi Sholom Dovber Glitzenstein under the Chabad of Thailand Foundation, has previously been inspected following complaints from local businesses and social media allegations linking the site to Israeli business networks. Authorities have repeatedly said the center is free to conduct religious activities but must comply with Thai law and cannot be used to facilitate illegal commercial operations. The latest inspection was part of a multi-agency crackdown on suspected nominee shareholding, illegal foreign business operations and unlicensed hotels. Man assaulted by vigilante group over alleged lèse-majesté posts, hospitalised; MP condemns attack A 42-year-old man with a history of psychiatric illness was assaulted by a vigilante group after being accused of posting content insulting the monarchy before being handed over to police, where he became the subject of a lèse-majesté complaint. The Thai Lawyers for Human Rights (TLHR) said the man was hospitalised with injuries and has filed a complaint against his attackers. TLHR said the group (#กองเรือนรก) tracked the man for several days before confronting him at his home in Don Mueang on July 22. Videos showed dozens of people surrounding and assaulting him before taking him to Tao Poon Police Station. Police said a lèse-majesté complaint had already been filed on July 21, but no summons or arrest warrant had been issued. The man's lawyers said police seized his two mobile phones as evidence before he was transferred to Don Mueang Police Station, where he reported the assault. He was later admitted to hospital with chest pain and other injuries. People's Party MP Sahassawat Kumkong condemned the assault, saying no one has the right to use violence or act as judge and executioner. 22 remain critical after deadly Lat Phrao fire; venue shut for 30 days Twenty-two people remained in critical condition following the fire at Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao, with health officials treating 63 injured victims across 16 hospitals as authorities ordered the entertainment venue closed for 30 days and calls grew for tighter safety regulations. The Public Health Ministry said most victims suffered severe burns and smoke inhalation requiring treatment in specialised burn units and intensive care units. Malaysia Limits Fuel Sales to Thai Vehicles as Betong Faces Petrol Rush Malaysian authorities have capped fuel sales to Thai vehicles at 35 ringgit per fill (about 290 baht) at petrol stations near the border as demand surged amid concerns over global oil supplies linked to fighting in the Middle East. The move comes as long queues formed at petrol stations in Betong district, Yala, on Sunday. Several stations reported temporary shortages, with some posting “diesel sold out” signs and others shortening operating hours to 12:00–18:00 while waiting for deliveries. Some stations also limited purchases to 1,000 baht per customer to manage demand. Lines of vehicles stretched onto nearby roads, and some residents brought large containers to store fuel for farming and transport. Fuel remains cheaper in Malaysia, where diesel sells for about 2.15 ringgit per litre (about 18 baht), while RON95 costs 1.99 ringgit (about 16 baht) and RON97 costs 3.85 ringgit (about 32 baht). Malaysian authorities say the limits are also aimed at curbing smuggling of subsidised fuel into Thailand. In Kelantan, enforcement officers have arrested 46 suspected smugglers and seized 75 modified vehicles worth about 451,500 ringgit (about 3.7 million baht) in operations since early this year. The vehicles — mostly Proton Wira and Proton Iswara sedans — had enlarged or additional fuel tanks installed in the boot or beneath rear seats to transport fuel to transit points before smuggling it across the border. Authorities are also monitoring 48 petrol stations near the Thai border in Kelantan, about half located within a 25-kilometre radius. Separately, Malaysia’s Road Transport Department warned Thai vehicles without an International Circulation Permit (ICP) found more than two kilometres from border entry points could be seized.
