Ahmedabad is healing… Amidst all the negatives…happy to share a positive development by Amdavad Municipal Corporation to not succumb to the demands of so many offices, car showrooms and their parking requirements but instead choosing to pedestrianise the buffer space between highway and service road. The fact that this is right in front of my office makes it even more sweet.

To all the urban planners out there, check out this intersection design with cycle lanes on the median of the road! Kudos to Amdavad Municipal Corporation for doing a good job at designing broad, walkable footpaths at Rajpath Rangoli road. However sadly the design is still imperfect and needs bollards parallel to the road so that entitled car and SUV owners don’t encroach upon them! Also, why not empower pedestrians with an app in which they can take a photo and report and challans can reach the car owners online? Fully automated! Can be an additional revenue stream for the corporation.

Ahmedabad is taking some right steps as it prepares itself for becoming the host city for #olympics2036. This is one of the examples where the stretch between an 8-10 lane highway and a 2 lane service road which was lying in shambles has been converted into a pedestrian walkway! Finally spotted median cycle lanes in India. An idea that I have been professing for long! ✅ No hawker encroachments ✅ No cars parked on the lane ✅ No pedestrians walking on it ✅ Shaded lanes ✅ Buffer between main carriageway and cycle lane ✅ Elevated so no water puddles But, ❌ Intrusive bollards ❌ Obstructive trees ❌ Lack of cleanliness ❌ Hoarding obstructing exit ❌ Lack of smooth entry/exit at crossroads So close yet not perfect. Found a delivery partner riding MYBYK! Nothing can beat a candid feedback directly from your consumer. The guy is earning an average of ₹1250 per day and after deducting for the rent, the net daily average earnings will be around ₹1100. That’s almost double of any other job even if we consider 25 working days. Having said that, the job clearly lacks career progression and I am looking for partners to solve that too!

Visited Beijing and Shanghai last week and here’s my experience on their cities and public infrastructure. If #India decides to leave the #GDP race and focus on making cities more liveable by prioritising public transport and active mobility such as walking and cycling, it can solve many problems not just around health such as #FightingObesity but also reducing petroleum imports and our dependency on OPEC and other countries. Not to forget, we can reduce #pollution.
