I joined CNN tonight to discuss the latest in trade talks with the United States. A deal will help us move forward, but the threats we’ve seen from the U.S. over the past several years highlight why we need to broaden our markets. We can’t rely on the U.S. in the same way we once did. Nova Scotia will continue working to expand our export markets, develop our own resources, and become more self-reliant.

While on CNN, I was asked if Nova Scotia is looking to diversify trade in response to the actions of the Trump administration. I said clearly to their audience that the answer is “yes”. When one tweet in the middle of the night from the President can create chaos of our economy, it’s not a long-term plan to rely so heavily on that market. That’s why I’m continuing to work to attract investment into our province, while also identifying partners to get Nova Scotian products into new markets. This is about protecting Nova Scotia’s future. Identifying new markets and developing our resources is how we continue paying for healthcare, education, and infrastructure while working to bring taxes in-line with the rest of Canada. I’m committed to doing this work to keep building Nova Scotia.

I was disappointed today when the opposition blocked a motion condemning the federal government's plan to take advantage of the kindness and compassion of Nova Scotians. Our government has a responsible, strategic plan to attract the professionals, like doctors and nurses, that our province needs. The federal government's move will disrupt this balance.
