Touch -> smell/taste -> balance -> hearing -> vision. This is the evolutionary order in which biological senses developed. The engineering difficulty roughly follows the reverse order. Vision is pretty easy now. But touch and smell are incredibly hard. Perhaps what took longer to develop are just a lot more complex (more hierarchies, more neural development, etc.)?

Solid "handshake" from a cool visitor to our new Austin office Daxo Robotics. We are still surprised every time we interact with our robotic hand -- it has a strong grip but doesn't hurt you. This is a portion of the force info we get from the hand, both when it's actively controlled and passively wiggled. We damaged some motors (black hexagons) from shipping the robot. But the fingers still have their full range of motion, thanks to the robustness of complexity.
