This is the Basketball Rondo passing drill. We have this in the activities library. (Download more games like this here➡️ This is a great game for passing under pressure. Four players are in a small space, like you see in the video, with three defenders. The defense has to get a steal in order to go on offense. The offense has to make 10 passes in a row to win the game. Coaches can change the space the players operate in, adjust the number of players in the game, and even combine their principles of play into it. For example, you could apply “zero-second decisions,” where players must pass immediately upon catching it, or it’s a turnover.

This is a great example of using analytics to inform your principles of play. As you can see, the longer it is in the shot clock, the lower the field goal percentage. As a coach, you have to ask yourself, “How do I slow the other team down?” And one of the ways you can do this is by tagging up on a shot attempt. Tagging up: offensive players will crash the glass by “tagging” the player closest to them. This allows the offense, which is going to defense, to match up already. This slows down transition offenses by “choking” the ball and making it more difficult for players to throw outlet passes. It will also slow the other team’s offense down if they rely on one player to initiate their offense. 🎥/🎬: NBA

The University of Missouri led by Dennis Gates has become one of the most progressive programs in the NCAA. Their secret? They are committed to evidence-based coaching and are guided by the Constraints-Led Approach (CLA) This game is an effective way for coaches to help their teams improve their finishing ability in live action. By practicing against live defense and in game-like scenarios, players can develop the necessary skills and adaptability to perform better in actual games. Implementing this drill, or similar ones that focus on live action and adaptation, could be a valuable addition to a team’s practice routine.

This 2v1 shooting game by Dusty May simulates a slot-to-slot pass in early offense. This works on your decision-making in the 2v1 situation. This is a common advantage in basketball. You can see the rim is always protected, so players have to find a ROB (range, open, balance) shot from behind the three-point line. The game encourages this. This 2v1 game teaches players to play with Domino’s principles, such as zero-second decisions, where players have to shoot, drive, or pass in less than one second to hunt ROB silver medal shots — corner catch-and-shoot 3s. What are other ways coaches can constrain this game to work on different principles?

Why is the Mikan not an effective drill, and what is the best alternative?

This type of training is what we call Differential Learning (DL). Using DL for warm-ups is a highly effective strategy, as it “opens up” a player’s system degrees of freedom. It can also be an excellent tool for light training days, especially for recovery, helping players restore a wide range of movement solutions post-competition. When performing DL activities, we want to encourage as much variability as possible. A shooter may shoot out of different stances (e.g., feet wide, feet narrow, staggered, one leg), with different release speeds, varying arc heights, etc. There are an endless number of ways to do this. As the shooter performs their DL tasks, they should continually change their range and location (even if this means taking one or two steps between every shot). The passer should also pass from different angles, from different locations, and with varying velocities and spins.

It’s interesting to hear Joe Mazzulla promote chaos and unpredictability in training! ”The game is so unpredictable and a lot of times in the coaching world, you practice predictability and comfort, our (Celtics) guys have done a great job buying into the opposite.”

The Illinois Fighting Illini coaching staff made a conscious decision to prioritize shot selection and quality over pace of play, recognizing that this approach would lead to the most efficient and effective offense. They implemented various constraints and drills to train players to identify and take "gold medal" shots, even if it meant sacrificing some of the team's preferred fast-paced style. The team's willingness to adapt and embrace a slower, more deliberate offense has paid off, as it allowed them to maximize their scoring opportunities and achieve their desired offensive efficiency.

Coaches might lose their minds over this🤷♂️ But when you remove the whistle and allow players to travel during a small sided game like this, you might just open the door to movement patterns they've never explored before. Would you ever try this?

🏀 Why do we keep running pre-game layup lines when they don’t actually help players finish in games? 👉 In real basketball, you’re not walking into wide open layups. You’ve got pressure from behind, contact at the rim, and defenders trying to throw you off. That’s why finishing has to be trained in game-like conditions. 🔥Try our “Around the Arc 1v1” game. Full breakdown is in the video.

Want to improve your players’ ball handling and deception? 🪞 Try this 1v1 “Shadow” game. Players change direction, pace, and pick up the ball from a chair—while being shadowed by a defender who doesn’t know which way they'll go. It’s a fun, game-like way to build decision-making and deceptive movement. Add constraints to shape the challenge! 👇 Comment SSG for our Small-Sided Games Playbook

Ty Jerome’s success is attributed to his exceptional perception-action coupling, which allows him to quickly process information and execute corresponding actions. His ability to read the body language of both his defender and the helping defenders enables him to manipulate the defense and create favorable situations for himself or his teammates. So what does this mean for coaches? The fundamental shift is for coaches to stop being "instructors" who teach techniques (such as the in and out or cross jab between the legs), and instead become "architects of an environment" where solutions can emerge. This is done by creating a game-like environment with constraints, such as a one-on-one situation where the defender must start and stay on the three-point line until the offense gets there, forcing the offense to solve a problem with defense present. The core idea is that when using the constraints-led approach, coaches are architects of a good learning environment, not teachers of techniques.

🚫 Should U14 teams run set plays? The problem with coaches teaching "motion" and sets at this age group are that teams stop running and playing fast. For youth teams, especially U14 and below, the highest value shots will always come in transition. That’s why teaching transition principles and flowing into simple triggers like a get or blast cut is far more valuable for teaching players how to play instead of what to play!

🔥 Our favorite constraint at Transforming Basketball 🧠 The "Floor is Lava" constraint creates better spacing by forcing players to escape the paint, encouraging smarter positioning and movement without the ball. 😄 Players love it. Coaches see results. 🔁+❤️ Repost and Like this post, and we'll send you the full breakdown. (Valid 72h only)
