NEW: Charlie Kirk’s family has filed a Notice of Claim against the State of Utah, Utah Valley University, the UVU Police Department, Police Chief Jeffrey Long, former UVU President Astrid Tuminez and other state actors — the first formal step toward potential legal action over Kirk’s death. The family’s attorneys allege a series of security failures contributed to Kirk’s shooting death at UVU last year. Among the new allegations: the filing claims Chief Long asked Tuminez for approval to assign more than six UVU police officers to the outdoor event, but “his request was denied.” KUTV2news

FACE THE NATION: Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said Sunday the state is preparing for a potential change to federal mail-in voting rules as the U.S. Supreme Court considers whether new U.S. Postal Service requirements can take effect ahead of the November election. The rules would require states and local election officials to meet new requirements for ballot envelopes and provide information about mail voters to the Postal Service. A federal appeals court has kept the rules blocked while the Trump administration seeks relief from the Supreme Court. The issue could have a significant impact in Utah, where voting by mail is widely used. During an interview on CBS’ “Face the Nation,” Cox said Utah spent years developing its vote-by-mail system and has security measures in place. “It would certainly have an impact here in the state of Utah,” Cox said. “Unlike many other states, we took about a decade to implement vote-by-mail.” Cox said the state continues to add security measures and understands concerns that have been raised about mail voting in other states. “We do it very well here in the state of Utah, but we’ll be prepared for whatever decision happens and make sure that we’re ready so that everyone gets to vote,” Cox said. Cox said eligible Utah voters will be able to cast their ballots regardless of what the Supreme Court decides. “Everyone who should be voting will be able to vote in Utah,” he said.

Tyler Robinson, the man accused of shooting and killing Charlie Kirk on the Utah Valley University campus on Sept. 10, appeared in person for the first time in court today. He seemed oddly upbeat as he chatted with his attorneys while the death penalty case began. Robinson’s father, mother and brother were also in the courtroom. The defense asked that they be allowed to stay while the public and media were asked to leave for a closed session, but Judge Graf ruled the family must leave as well. The closed hearing focused on earlier proceedings and what information can legally be made public. Attorneys representing several media outlets are now arguing for access to those prior sessions, pushing for them to be opened to the public.

Priddis fought back, throwing several punches before the two were separated. No one was ever prosecuted, but following the incident, Perry was banned from the BYU campus. #HolyWar #BYUvsUTAH

INCREDIBLE SURVIVAL: As the Fairview Fire tore through Spokane, Washington, one family managed to save their home while hundreds of others were lost. Joe Cvancara and his family dug a protective fire line around their property to help defend it from the flames. His daughter, Hannah Cvancara, who helped build the line, shared these images with CBS. The effort appears to have paid off. Their home was spared, even as homes surrounding the property were destroyed. The Fairview Fire has now burned more than 3,000 acres and destroyed more than 600 structures, making it one of the most devastating wildfires in Spokane's history.

❤️🇺🇸A beautiful sight in the midst of tragedy in Mona, Utah. Community members and neighboring fire agencies lined the street as Lydia Vernon returned home after her mother, stepfather and three brothers were killed in a flash flood. Friends tell me Lydia had been living out of state while earning her nursing degree, which she recently completed, and had been staying near her father in Kentucky. She grew up in this Mona neighborhood and came home to an empty house, but also to a community filled with love, support and people ready to lift her up during an unimaginable time. Spencer and Katrina Long and their 3 sons died in a flash flood in Wayne County, Utah. Video Todd Roundy, he spoke to KUTV 2News Natalie Wadas News about why he wanted to be there to suppor the family tonight on 2 News at 5 and 6pm.

lash flooding forced Don Cann and several members of his family to spend an unexpected night in Capitol Reef National Park’s Cathedral Valley this weekend. Cann says floodwater washed out the access road, leaving it impassable and preventing the group from getting back to camp. They spent the night in their vehicles. By Sunday morning, they were able to use a four-wheel-drive vehicle to get through the heavy mud and make it out safely. Watch Cann’s video. His interview with Jim Spiewak is linked in the comments.

HOMELESSNESS IN SALT LAKE CITY IS GETTING NATIONAL ATTENTION. A clip from a recent four-hour episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience” is going viral after Rogan and comedians Shane Gillis, Mark Normand and Ari Shaffir talked about what they described seeing in Salt Lake City. “You go to Salt Lake City, you get chased,” Normand said. “SLC is bad for homeless,” Shaffir said. Gillis recalled telling friends how clean and nice Salt Lake City was before a recent visit, then said, “We landed and it was 10 homeless guys chasing us.” The conversation turned to homelessness nationwide and the money being spent to address it. “The problem is there is so much money in maintaining it,” Rogan said. BREAKING: Kaysville Police say reckless fireworks, not arson, sparked the brush fire that forced evacuations near East Mountain Wilderness Park in Kaysville. According to investigators, a group of young adults was shooting bottle rocket-style fireworks at each other when one rocket flew into dry grass, igniting the fire. Police say the individuals have been identified and admitted to setting off the fireworks, but they left without calling 911 to report the fire. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities will determine what enforcement actions are appropriate. Officials are reminding the public that East Mountain Wilderness Park is a designated no-fireworks area, and bottle rockets are illegal in Utah. Video: Matt Handy

WATCH THIS! A police pursuit involving a stolen vehicle in southern Utah came to a quick end when a Washington County sheriff's deputy deployed a Grappler Police Bumper, wrapping a tether around the vehicle's rear tire. The pursuit began Wednesday after police were alerted to a vehicle reported stolen out of California entering Utah on I-15 from Arizona. Deputies say the driver repeatedly refused to stop and even tried to take off again after the Grappler was deployed, backing up in an attempt to break free. It didn't work. The system held the vehicle in place, and deputies and Hurricane police officers pulled the driver from the vehicle and took the suspect into custody. The suspect was booked on suspicion of possessing a stolen vehicle, evading police, driving on a suspended license and having an open container in the vehicle. WATCH: Shocking new video from a Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter shows the devastating damage left behind after Sunday's flash flooding washed out SR-153 through Beaver Canyon. According to UDOT, the highway is closed indefinitely after debris flows destroyed multiple sections of the road. The most severe damage is between mileposts 7.5 and 10.5, with another section near milepost 14 washed away. 📍At about the 1:00 mark in the video, the most extensive washouts come into view. Officials warn the canyon remains unsafe, with additional thunderstorms this week capable of triggering more flooding and debris flows. #utah #cottonwoodfire #mudslide #flashflood

I took this video on the north east end of Utah Valley University campus on September 10, 2025. This was after swarms of officers from all over neighboring counties responded to the university after the shooting of Charlie Kirk. During today’s preliminary hearing, they discussed how the weapon prosecutors say is connected to Tyler Robinson was found in this area. There was also discussion of separate spent bullet or casing found in the same area. agent Hull with DPS said that was likely due to all the officers who are trained to chamber around when they start searches and would’ve emptied it after finishing their search and securing their duty rifle.
