Warner Bros. didn't understand Zack Snyder's pitch for 300. They thought it was too similar to other recent sword and sandals movies like Troy. So he convinced them to let him make this proof of concept. "Then they said 'ok, we're going to give you some money. Not a lot. A small amount. To go and film a scene from the movie.' I really just wanted to show them the style of the world rather than a specific moment from the script to say 'this is the world it takes place in,' so we did this little sort of 360 degree shot of a Spartan fighting some Persian soldiers."

As a safety measure on the set of Army of the Dead, Zack Snyder had prop master Brett Andrews design customized airsoft guns, replacing many components with authentic gun parts. In 'Army of the Dead: The Making of the Film' book, Andrews says it wasn't only safer, but also faster to film, and far more budget friendly. With over 900,000 rounds of airsoft ammunition during production, Andrews said "the math works out to something "ludicrous" compared to traditional blank-fire guns.

That time Tom Cruise called Zack Snyder to congratulate him on 300's opening weekend box office . "Everyone was pretty confident, but they weren't really sure. I mean, I think it was 70 something million dollars it made in its opening weekend. "And I was shooting a TV commercial the day, that Sunday morning in downtown LA, and I got a call from Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise called me to say congratulations, okay, had nothing to do with the movie, didn't work at Warner Brothers. "I'd met him once over at his house to talk about cuz he'd seen the trailer for 300 was like this is awesome. And I just kind of tell him how he did it and everything was really, he's a sort of student of cinema and student film. "So he really wanted to know what this was. And he's the one that called me and said like '$70 million opening weekend. Congratulations, that's awesome!' "I was like, 'thanks Tom.'"

"You know, I don't, I have not changed. I really make the movies for myself. I really, really do." Q: "For no one else, or just sort of like what you ultimately want to see in them?" "Yeah, I think so." Q: "As a fan yourself, too? "What I want to see, yeah, like as a, like, you only have the benchmark of yourself. Like, if you ever try and make a movie for someone other than yourself... I feel like you're going to blow it. "Because you can't, you don't know how anyone else is going to feel. So like, you know, you go, 'okay, do I find that emotionally real? Do I find that interesting? Is that the Krypton I want to go to? Is that the Superman I want to see fight?' "You know, those are the questions you ask yourself constantly. And I think once you, if you're constantly answering yes to that, then you'll end up the more, the film will end up being more interesting to you. "And ultimately, the film being interesting to you allows you to make the movie better because you're interested. "If you make it for someone else over a two-year period, you're just going to not give a sh*t at some point because you're just like, 'I don't care. This is not my movie. I don't care about this movie because I made it for someone else.'" Q: "I imagine that's a very hard thing to do in Hollywood, though, is to keep your vision clear with so much collaboration, with so much going on, with so many other people in the mix." "It really depends on the project. For instance, it was hard on Guardians, you know, where I feel like what ended up happening on that movie was people, we did end up, they did end up asking me like, 'this is for kids, right?' "And I got to honestly say that I knew it was for kids, but I didn't want to make it for kids. You know what I mean? And I think that's what happened to that movie. It did get like second guessed at the end and turned more into a movie for kids. "My point of view is I can think like a child if I want. I have that enthusiasm for movies and what I think is cool. You, the collective you, don't need to try and second guess me and go, 'this is what we think a kid would like.' "And then it's like, 'oh, a song' or whatever. Then you're just like, 'okay, whatever.'"

Wonder Woman writer Allan Heinberg on creating the Wonder Woman script with Zack Snyder: "So I tell this story to Zack, and Zack is like, I can tell that these, I approach things differently, I guess, than, I mean, Zach's movies are very, they're not emotional, primarily emotional, and I tend to approach things in a primarily emotional way. "So I didn't expect Zack to respond necessarily, but I was there to eat my chicken and save my piece and go... And Zack's people pushed back, and I think they really were trying to protect him and protect all the work they had done. "And then we walk out to the parking lot after about two and a half hours, three hours, and Zack is like, 'so what are you doing tomorrow?' And I was like, 'well, scandal, what's going on?' And he's like, 'well, do you think you could be here by 7:15?' And I was like, 'for what exactly?' And he's like, 'dude, we're gonna do your movie.' "And I was like, 'what?' And he's like 'Yeah, let's do that, we should do that. Like, I'll get whiteboards, it'll be you and me and Geoff, and we'll just, like, re-break the movie from scratch.' And I'm like... he hasn't talked to anyone wearing suspenders back at the ranch with the sideburns. "So I was like, 'I'm full-time on scandal, dude, I can't...' So he's like, 'you can do it, I know you can do it.' And Zack is awesome. Like, when he looks at you with his surfer-y eyes and like his tattoos and he tells you you can do it, no one talks to me that way. Okay, if Zack thinks I can do it, I can do it. "So I write the treatment in a week, and then Zach is like, 'cool, that got approved, you're writing the script.' And I said, 'no, no.' 'Cause they needed it in no time. The movie had a release date, like we're now up against it... "The happy ending is the movie was made and it was that movie so Zach was true to his word...I mean, listen, look at what happened. Like, there was no job for me. There was no job. They didn't call and say like, 'hey, you wanna write the Wonder Woman movie?' "Geoff said, 'will you come and talk to Zack?' And if Zack hadn't been open and hadn't seen the value, I mean, you saw it, it's a relationship movie. It has some fighting in it and stuff, but it's about these two people and about a mom and a daughter, but like, it's a relationship movie. That's what it's about. "That is a profound change from the way that, and I was convinced that Zack because of his, that hasn't been what he's done up until now. "Like Zack is a hero to me for championing this vision of this movie. "And you know, Zack and Debbie Snyder gave notes all along the way and it really was this incredible group effort."

"...I was with the director, Adam McKay...and we said 'let's go see Dawn of the Dead,' "About five minutes in we just turned to each other and went, did we just stumble into the coolest fucking movie I've ever seen in my life? Which I always follow with, 'there's nothing in this movie I'm capable of doing.'"

"I mean, obviously Love Actually is my favorite Christmas movie because that is just the best Christmas movie, probably." "Favorite character?" "I would say… the Liam Neeson storyline, only because the “let’s go get the sh!t kicked out of us by love” moment is probably, you know… everyone gets a little weepy."

Zack Snyder always says they didn't cut anything from 300, but that's not entirely true... "One thing, we didn't put it back in the movie, but it's a deleted scene. In battle four, or three, which is the sort of kitchen sink sequence, where they're fighting everything, you know, the whole ridiculous elephants and rhinos part. "There was also a... these giants that had sort of elves riding on their backs. They were like these little archers with arrows and they were shooting them and then these giants had their arms lopped off and had little hooks on the ends of their arms and they were lumbering across the battlefield and they get their legs chopped off and one falls and the little elf kind of falls off and rolls. "But I think it's actually Tom who leaps onto the dead body of the giant and spears this little elf and it's really sad. It was even too much for me. I got to admit it. "I said, you know what, no, this is wrong."

James Cameron once said Zack Snyder is one of his cinematic inspirations. "I certainly have studied the masters, you know David Lean, Hitchcock, Kubrick, you know everybody.. "Directors that continue to inspire me, Ridley Scott, I mean I'll go to see any Ridley Scott movie, even the ones that bomb to me are great because of the fabric of the filmmaking, you know just the way he sees, the way he places the camera and so on. "And I'm out there going to school every day. I think any good filmmaker is out there going to school. I'm also inspired by, these are established filmmakers now, but I remember being very inspired by them when they first kind of broke on the scene like Zack Snyder and Robert Rodriguez, guys that were just creating their own new cinematic language, you know. So I can be inspired by somebody whose name I don't even know."

"Is there one that got away, is there a no that you above everything else, really regret?" "...300...That was like a story my grandmother used to tell me as a kid, she always told me Greek myth stories. She was a classics professor, and I was so close to it that I thought we should do it for real, and I saw this comic book, the Miller book, and I thought, 'Oh come on. You can't do it like that.'" "Does it make you feel better, I did too. Because we had Zack Snyder off of Dawn of the Dead. And we had a book that we were developing in the same space with another prominent filmmaker, and we felt like we couldn't do it. "'Ridley Scott should do it! Ridley Scott should do it like Gladiator!'" "It wasn't obvious, and I mean kudos to you guys because it wasn't obvious until it was obvious, right?" "At the time when Zack Snyder came in, I said 'Okay, are there swords in this movie, yes. Are there sandals, arrows, yes, shields, yes.' I said, 'Come on, we just did Troy 20 minutes ago. How could we do that?'" And we took partners in it."

Gal Gadot shared her screen test with Ben Affleck for Batman v Superman: "Twelve years ago today, I was cast as Wonder Woman. What a wild, life-changing ride with a character I love so much. I thought it would be fun to share my camera test with Ben — I watched it last night for the first time 😜 Zack Snyder thank you for sharing this with me and for casting me as Diana Prince. 🙅🏻♀️♥️" (Gal Gadot - IG)

Part of Zack Snyder's 300 pitch to Warner Bros. Included a 300 motion comic narrated by Scott Glenn. "So the first thing we did was we took the book and we scanned it into the computer. We photoshopped out all the dialogue. Kurt and I wrote a script..." "And a friend of ours, this actor named Scott Glenn, he was kind enough to come down and do a little awesome voiceover to make it cool."

Zack Snyder: "When you make a movie, a lot of times you take a second camera, and if the actors are talking, you stick a second camera in there to try and get a close up or something like that to make it move along faster. "That second camera normally suffers a little bit in its composition design just because it's not the primary focus, but for this movie, it's a one camera show." Larry Fong: "His shots are so designed, so it's hard to kind of get a B camera just somewhere to get another shot. He won't use it. When you're doing 180 degree dolly moves and stuff, I mean, where do you put the other camera? "It's great for me because that means I can make each shot the way I want it to without compromising, which you usually do when you have two."

Zack Snyder when asked if he felt any competition from the MCU: "I personally don't, I think the studio might feel that way a little bit. They're like 'THEY have a movie with a ton of superheroes, where's OUR movie with a ton of superheroes? They have Iron Man, where's our guy in a metal suit?' "Whatever, they actually haven't said that to me, but I can imagine those conversations. I mean, that's not outrageous. I would not blame them for that because I'd probably be saying the same thing in their position. "But I don't feel like I'm in competition with the Marvel movies only because I think the way - and Chris [Nolan] and I have talked about this a lot - and I think Warner Bros. really needs to stay with what we do. "After the Dark Knight trilogy and now this sort of restart of Superman, we have a tone we're kind of into. And it works for us. It works for me, and it works for the DC universe in a different way. "It's funny because in the comic book world, the Marvel comics were the darker ones and DC was the bright happier one, but it's this weird thing where it's a paradigm switch, which is kind of fun, I like it."
